Seizure Drugs Linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome

By John Curran

Dilantin, Lamictal seizure drugsDilantin (phenytoin) and Lamictal (lamotrigine) are the first lines of defense for two separate indications: epilepsy and minimizing seizures. Lamictal is also used to treat depressive episodes in bipolar disorder. Both medications carry black-box warnings for Stevens Johnson Syndrome, a rare autoimmune disorder that attacks the mucus membranes.

The federal Food and Drug Administration did not make the changes to the labeling of these drugs until years after they were introduced to market, even though studies had indicated the risks for these medications were significantly higher than other medications for years. However, for many doctors, the possibility of Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects are so low that they often fail to warn patients of this risk.

Best-Selling Antibiotic Linked to Heart Failure

By Robert J. Boumis

Zithromax heart attackPeople forget that many processes in the human body are literally electric. The human heart in particular has a very complex system of nerves that coordinate the various muscles needed to keep this biological pump running smoothly. However, one extremely popular antibiotic, Zithromax, may cause changes in the electrical systems of the heart. These changes can lead to lethal side effects like heart failure.

Zithromax is a powerhouse drug. It dominates the market for antibiotics. Zithromax is the trade name of azithromycin, and also sells under the name Azithrocin, Zmax, Z-Pak, and Azin. It belongs to the macrolide class of antibiotics, and works by interfering with bacteria’s ability to synthesize proteins. This makes the drug very effective against a wide variety of bacterial infections, including everything from food poisoning to STDs. This has led to Zithromax and its derivatives being one of the best – if not the best – selling antibiotics in the world. In the United States alone, Zithromax sales generate more than a billion dollars per year in revenue.

Judge Certifies Black Swan Unpaid Intern Class Action Lawsuit

By Anne Bucher

Black Swan lawsuitOn June 11, 2013, a federal judge approved a class action lawsuit for unpaid interns who worked on production of the popular film "Black Swan," allowing them to proceed with claims against the defendants. The plaintiffs allege that they served an essential function for the company without receiving special job training and that they should have been paid for their work.

Judge William Pauley III ruled that Fox Searchlight Pictures Inc. (“Searchlight”) and Fox Entertainment Group, Inc. (FEG) had violated federal laws by using unpaid interns to perform work, without offering job training that they could have gained as entry-level employees. FEG is the parent corporation of Searchlight and approximately 800 other subsidiaries. In the court opinion, the judge found that the plaintiff interns qualified as employees of the company.

Orthopedic Surgeon Sues Unum for Denying Disability

By Jessica Tyner

Unum insurance lawsuitDr. Alan M. Gross was a successful California orthopedic surgeon since the mid-1980s, and he counted on Unum to provide disability insurance just in case he became unable to practice. After all, as a surgeon, his costs of living were relatively high and he wanted to ensure that he and his loved ones would be protected in a worst case scenario. Unfortunately, when the worst case did happen, he found out just how ill-equipped he really was.

In the mid-90s, Gross was diagnosed with diabetes when he began experiencing numbness in his hands and blurred vision – heartbreaking side effects for a surgeon. However, he thought the disease was under control and continued practicing. Two years after his diabetes diagnoses, he took off his gloves post-surgery and noticed it was filled with blood. He’d cut himself during surgery, but didn’t realize it because of the numbness. He knew he had to stop operating.
