Lawsuits Like Unum Provident Claim Denial Cases Enrage Some

By John Curran

Unum disability insurance denialA number of Unum Provident claim denial lawsuit attorneys file claims on behalf of clients who have been violently attacked. Of course, that includes police officers. But some people are questioning the view of some claim denial specialists, as well as the doctors who evaluate them. Take, for example, the case of a Houston police officer who was involved in a high-speed chase.

Jason Roy was pursuing a car thief who ended up flipping his car and then Roy did the same, trying to avoid the thief’s wrecked car. He ended up paralyzed, and has only regained partial control of his body. Yet the city is still holding out on providing him disability benefits, arguing that a company using employees like Unum Provident claim denial specialists rightfully nixed his claim. The reason: a doctor whose assessment sounds like, “It depends on what your definition of ‘is’ is.”

Initially, he signed off on the city issuing Roy disability benefits. He later recanted, arguing that while the ex-police officer who says he was “left for dead” was qualified medically, but not legally. The disability insurance claim denial process is currently moving forward with a state hearing next month, effectively ignoring the city.

Yet claim denial lawsuit attorneys would dispute the state’s responsibility, arguing that the city has its own insurance policy and is simply unwilling to watch its disability insurance premiums rise as a result of the incident. Similar situations have happened to other police officers and even teachers because their employers either mishandled the situation or refused to accept the fact that the severely injured claimants had valid disability insurance claims.

It’s a problem that has grown for both public safety personnel and those facing mental trauma. Mental health patients have difficulty offering hard proof that they can’t work, leaving openings for Unum Provident disability insurance claim denial specialists to avoid paying benefits.
