Fraud Leads to More Disability Insurance Claim Denials

By John Curran

Social Security Disability Insurance A recent NPR report indicates that the growth of Social Security Disability Insurance claims continues to mount, and in one case may be linked to fraud. There are some mitigating factors, but people who have dealt with claim denial specialists from private insurers should note that there are also differences between the two types of insurance.

They do share at least one similarity, however. Harold Pollack of the University of Chicago told the Washington Post that more often than not, employees at the Social Security Administration work to prevent disability claim fraud. He does not mention it, but even in the case of those who have claims with merit, it means that they have to go through the lengthy appeals process. That is also the case for people who have policies from providers like Unum disability insurance.

Pollack notes that the growth in Social Security Disability Insurance claims is not surprising given the relative health of the economy and the aging workplace. On the former, he argues that people who are only finding low-paying jobs without health insurance are apt to continue working until they are too unhealthy to continue. Even with private insurers, benefits may be better for private disability insurance providers than for those offered by health insurers who contract with an employer.

Whether it is from Social Security Disability Insurance or Unum disability insurance or any other private provider, Pollack notes that benefits — and specifically SSDI benefits — are about the same as that of a minimum wage worker. If people are trying to game the system for that goal, it says more about the economy, he argues. Disability insurance lawsuit attorneys argue that while private providers often pay more, it is still not going to make up for all of an employee’s lost salary.

The stigma that conservatives and others who worry about excessive spending may lead people to believe that they should not try to get the benefits they deserve. However, if they have injuries that keep them from working and have a policy, they are entitled to benefits. For those who want to ensure they succeed after an initial denial, contacting a disability insurance lawsuit attorney is the first step.
