More Unum Insurance Complaints Flood In

By Jessica Tyner

Disability insurance lawsuitTop Class Actions has been receiving throngs of complaints about Unum Insurance Company from people claiming that Unum irrationally declines valid disability claims — leaving the policyholders stuck with insurmountable medical debt. The complaints mirror legal action taken against Unum, with dozens of Unum fraud lawsuits being filed each year. Judy from Portland, Oregon, is just one of the many recent Unum claim denial victims.

As a nurse for a mobile unit, Judy’s work takes her to a number of different medical clinics and settings. In 2004, she got a staph infection that wasn’t treatable by penicillin from a simple paper cut. Once the infection entered her bloodstream, it spread quickly and caused Judy to spend weeks in the hospital in so much pain that she could barely move. Her critical condition kept her out of work for a year as she went through rehabilitation in an effort to re-learn how to walk.

Unum’s Refusal to Pay

There are many stories about Unum denying claims, but that wasn’t the case with Judy. The company actually approved her claim numerous times but never made a payment. Judy had initially received a check from Unum, but before it was deposited the insurance company called her because they claimed they had paid the wrong amount and put a stop check on her compensation. She never received another check.

As Judy battles Unum like many other victims, she’s lost her home and continues to rack up medical bills that simply aren’t manageable. Unlike others, she at least has a head start for her Unum lawsuit since she does have proof that Unum agreed to pay. However, that does little to help as she and her husband continue to suffer because of Unum’s unfair business practices.

A Series of Unum Claim Denial Tactics

Elvira from Pennsylvania paid into her Unum policy for three years until she became disabled in 2004 with Guillain-Barre Syndrome. As she was waiting for government-approval for SSI disability benefits — which is a notoriously slow process — Unum paid her monthly disability fees. The moment her SSI was approved, Unum demanded that Elvira pay back the $22,000 she’d been paid. This forced Elvira to file for bankruptcy and lose her home.

Another Unum claim denial victim from Oregon named Mason had a massive heart failure at only 25 years old. Just four months after two major surgeries, the healing scar became inflamed and his doctor recommended an additional five weeks off of work. Unum denied his claim, stating that there’s no “proof” of additional damage regardless of his doctor’s recommendation. His story isn’t unique.

Do You Have a Unum Policy?

Thousands of people have Unum disability or life insurance, and there are hundreds of horror stories about the company. If you have Unum and were unfairly denied a claim, you might have a legal claim.
