Unum-claims-denialUnum is the largest disability provider in the U.S. and promises to deliver benefits to policyholders who suffer significant illness or injury. According to the company’s website, Unum is “a leading provider of financial protection benefits in the United States and the United Kingdom.”

While millions of people trust Unum to provide disability coverage, the disability insurance company has come under fire for its unscrupulous Unum claim denial practices. Former employees have reported that the company rewards workers who deny the largest disability claims. They allege that Unum management sets a claim-denial quota each month. The company has also been accused of relying on the guidance of internal physicians to review disability claims.

Some employees have alleged that the in-house physicians who make recommendations to deny disability claims receive substantial bonuses while those who attempt to make legitimate health decisions based on medical records and other evidence are retaliated against. Unum has essentially built a conflict of interest into their claims review process, stacking the odds against some of the most vulnerable Americans. Former Unum doctors have come forward to claim that they were fired after refusing to reach false medical conclusions to deny claims.

Unum Betrays Policyholders Who Depend on Disability Benefits

When workers become disabled, they face a major life change. When they are no longer able to work, they can no longer depend on their earnings to pay their expenses. Unum disability insurance benefits are essential to support themselves and their families. When Unum denies legitimate claims, the company puts policyholders in an extremely difficult situation. Even though the policyholders were proactive and paid for disability insurance, they find themselves without coverage just when they need it most.

Unum’s claim denial policies have led to more than 3,000 lawsuits filed by the federal government, state regulators and individuals who have been wrongfully denied disability payments they should have been entitled to receive. Back in 2002, Unum’s unfair claim denial policies were covered by the television program “60 Minutes.” Since then, the company’s claim denial processes have been investigated by a number of other media outlets. In 2003, Bloomberg BusinessWeek Magazine revealed that the company regularly gave out “Hungry Vulture” awards to top performers. This award has since been discontinued.
