Unum Disability Contracts Confusing to Policyholders

By Courtney Coren

Unum disability claim denial One Michigan Unum Insurance policyholder says that he fears that his benefits may come to halt before they should due to confusing language in his policy.

The anonymous Unum customer says he lived with severe heart failure for years before suffering a heart attack and kidney transplant in April 2009. He had been paying into a disability insurance policy with Provident Insurance Company since 1982, thinking he would be covered if he ever needed to use it.

E! Fashion Police Writers File Unpaid Overtime Class Action Lawsuit

By Jessica Tyner

Fashion PoliceIt might seem like all glitz and glamour working for a hit television show, but it turns out the writers of E's "Fashion Police" claim they’ve never been paid for working overtime. One of the pillars of wage and hour lawsuits and impending class action lawsuits are claims of unpaid overtime. Not being paid for overtime is something that can impact any employee, from school cafeteria workers to writers for a hit show. Writing for TV is a career showcased on "30 Rock," but it seems the reality of the job isn’t always a Liz Lemon-infused good time.

In total, 12 of the writers have complained to the Labor Standards Enforcement Division of California, which is for many workers the first step in claiming the wages they’ve rightfully earned. They’ve also gone on strike and are seeking a total of $1.5 million in overtime wages. According to one of the writers, they all want to go back to work, they enjoy writing for Fashion Police, and they simply want to get paid for the hours they’ve put in. This is an all too common complaint when workers are cheated out of their salaries.

Unum Accused of Illegally Denying Disability Claims

By Anne Bucher

Unum insurance claim denialMillions of Americans purchase disability coverage so that they can feel protected in the event they become disabled and unable to work in the future. Disability coverage is viewed as an important safety net for individuals who suffer from a catastrophic accident or develop a debilitating condition. Unfortunately, many insurance companies have received increased scrutiny about their policies for denying legitimate disability claims.

Unum, formerly called UnumProvident, is one of the companies that received substantial criticism about its claim denial policies. Due to its unscrupulous business practices, Unum has been featured on shows such as 60 Minutes and NBC Dateline. Thousands of people have filed Unum lawsuits, alleging that company representatives routinely deny legitimate claims in order to save money.

Unpaid Overtime Leads to Wage & Hour Lawsuits

By Christina Drury

restaurant unpaid overtimeThroughout the years, complaints against employers for improper payment methods have increased. Many workers are failing to receive overtime pay or have even been forced to work off the clock to complete work without receiving payment. One such incident that has occurred recently involves a large restaurant chain that is popular in the south, known as Steak ‘n Shake. The two plaintiffs in the unpaid overtime class action lawsuit, Beecher and Cain, are seeking class action status against the employer for several violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA).

Restaurant Reportedly Changed Tip Amounts

Among the chief complaints in the wage and hour class action lawsuit is that the restaurant not only changed the clock-in and clock-out hours on employee time cards, but also inflated the amount of tips that the employees actually received.

Class Action Lawsuits Over Unpaid Overtime, Wages Pick Up Steam

By Jessica Tyner

unpaid overtimeAround the country, more employees are taking action when it comes to their unpaid wages and unpaid overtime. "Wage and hour" lawsuits are kick-started when an employer refuses to pay an employee for the real amount of time worked -- including overtime -- or pressures a worker to work off the clock.

Oftentimes, an unpaid overtime lawsuit or employment class action lawsuit is the only way to recover wages owed to you. As a result, wage and hour lawsuits have been growing into the hundreds for the past five years.

By Jessica Tyner

Unum disabled worker lawsuitThere are mounting stories about Unum policyholders being denied their claims, and sometimes getting their approved claims revoked without explanation. This has been going on for years, such as the case with "Linda," who was in a serious collision in 1997 that left her disabled.
