Simplex Door Locks Class Action Lawsuit

An expensive door lock that can be found in thousands of hotels, banks, casinos, office buildings and airports is so unsafe that it can be broken into in seconds, says a class action lawsuit.

Kaba-Ilco, the maker of the widely-used Simplex series of push-button locks, is being sued in the class action lawsuit for selling a defective product that can quickly be broken into by any unskilled person wielding only a powerful magnet. These locks are pricy at $300 to $400 apiece, yet they are virtually worthless, according to the Kaba-Ilco class action.

The Kaba-Ilco Simplex class action lawsuit claims virtually all of Kaba’s Simplex locks are vulnerable, with the exception of the Series 5000 model. Kaba is one of the largest lock companies in the world and has likely sold millions of the popular, yet defective, Simplex mechanical push-button locks during the past 35 years. This could mean Kaba is facing millions of dollars in liability claims from thousands of consumers that rely on these locks for security and access if a class action settlement is reached.

According to the class action lawsuit, the problem with the Simplex locks is that they contain a combination chamber that, in August 2010, was discovered to be sensitive to a strong magnetic field. This defective design is contained in the following Unican and Simplex locks:

3000 Series

6200 Series

7000 Series

7100 Series

The defective Simplex door lock class action lawsuit is seeking damages, restitution and other relief on behalf of a proposed nationwide class of all individuals and entities that purchased a defective Simplex lock, including lock owners who intend to have the defective lock replaced, those who have already replaced the defective lock, and those who seek to have the defective lock repaired.
