Match.com Class Action Leads to Sex Offender Screening
By Mike Holter
The class action lawsuit, Jane Doe V. Match.com, was filed on behalf of a Los Angeles woman who was sexually assaulted by a man she had arranged a date with through Match.com. It was only later that the victim found out that he was a convicted serial sex offender.
“The Match.com Rape Case,” as it became known, did not seek compensatory damages, only to require the dating service to screen for sex offenders. Until then, Match.com’s iron-clad disclaimer protected the company from responsibility.
“This is exactly what we hoped would happen. We wanted our case to ignite the interest of the attorney general, who would have the resources to make other online dating services follow suit,” said the Plaintiff’s attorney. “I would love it if other states – and even the Federal Government – would follow California’s lead so the entire online dating community would be safer.”
