Neutrogena Naturals False Advertising Class Action Lawsuit
By Sarah Pierce
According to the Neutrogena Naturals class action lawsuit, Neutrogena is using “chemically-derived, synthetic fragrances” in its purifying facial cleanser, pore scrub, face and body bar, and fresh cleansing + makeup remover that are not necessary to blend the product or to maintain its effectiveness. The class action lawsuit also alleges that many of the ingredients Neutrogena claims to be “natural” are actually synthetically derived through processes that involve the use of chemicals and petrochemicals.
The only Neutrogena Naturals product that is made from wholly natural ingredients is the lip balm, the class action lawsuit says.
Had consumers known that Neutrogena Naturals products are not “all natural,” they would not have purchased the products at a premium price over comparable products that did not purport to be natural, the complaint continues.
The Neutrogena Naturals class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all persons who purchased Neutrogena Naturals (1) purifying facial cleanser, (2) purifying pore scrub, (3) face and body bar and/or (4) fresh cleansing + makeup remover in the United States from the release of the product line in 2011 into the present. It is seeking restitution and damages for the proposed Class and a Court order requiring Neutrogena to conduct a corrective advertising campaign.

The case is Desiree Stephenson v. Neutrogena Corp., Case No. 12-cv-0426, U.S. District Court, Northern District of California, San Francisco Division.
UPDATE 9/1/13: The Court approved the Neutrogena Naturals Class Action Settlement at the August 21, 2013 Final Fairness Hearing. Claims will be paid within 30-90 days unless an appeal is filed.
