Yaz birth control lawsuitFlorida resident Lemor Levy has filed a Yaz lawsuit against Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc., alleging that she suffered serious health problems caused by the oral contraceptive.

Levy’s lawsuit does not go into the details of her Yaz blood clot injuries, but other Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits have listed a number of serious injuries. Most of the alleged injuries claim that the birth control pills caused dangerous blood clotting disorders.

When blood clots occur inside the body, they can block the blood supply to critical organs and tissues. For example, if such a clot occurs in the blood vessels leading to the lungs, it can cause a dangerous pulmonary embolism. Similarly, a blood clot in the brain can produce a potentially deadly stroke.

Levy’s Yaz blood clot lawsuit cites background information, which includes research studies and patient reports indicating a link between Yaz and other similar birth control pills and an increased risk of dangerous blood clot related illnesses.

According to the Yaz lawsuit, Yaz and other Drospirenone-based birth control pills are more dangerous and carry an increased risk of stroke and pulmonary embolism compared to older-generation birth control pills.

Additionally, the Yaz blood clot lawsuit alleges that the Bayer was not only aware of the risks associated with their birth control pills, but that it aggressively marketed the drugs in spite of the risk.

Yaz Class Action Lawsuit vs. Yaz Lawsuit

So many Yaz and Yasmin lawsuits have been filed that they have been consolidated in to an MDL or Mass Tort. A Mass Tort is similar to a Yaz class action lawsuit. Although in a Yaz class action lawsuit all individuals join onto the same lawsuit and divide the settlement equally.

In a Mass Tort several individually lawsuits are organized together under a single judge at the same court. This is often a more appropriate avenue for defective drugs or medical devices than a class action lawsuit because in a Mass Tort, injuries can vary.

However, a Mass Tort does allow plaintiffs to use one attorney or a group of attorneys to represent them, and all lawsuits are able to use any information garnered through the discovery process, making it more efficient for both the plaintiffs and the defendants.

The Yaz lawsuit is Lemor Levy v. Bayer Corporation et al, Case No. 3:14-cv-10189-DRH-PMF, filed within the MDL In Re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Relevant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2100, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
