Actos LawsuitA major cancer information website, Cancer Monthly, is advising Actos patients to learn the symptoms of bladder cancer. This comes after a major studies have linked Actos side effects to bladder cancer, especially when taken over one year.

Actos is a diabetes drug designed to help patients control their blood sugar levels. However, some studies have found a strong link between the diabetes drug and bladder cancer. One study found that up to 40 percent of patients who took the drug developed bladder cancer.

Cancer Monthly collects data about survival rates, treatments, and other information for those suffering from cancer. The website’s managing editor, Alex Strauss, states that an awareness of these symptoms could be “life-saving” for patients taking Actos, since there is allegedly such a high risk of the cancer associated with the drug. The FDA has issued similar warnings.

The various warnings advise Actos users to watch for symptoms of bladder cancer. This includes changes in the frequency of urination, for example, having to urinate more often. Additionally, current and former Actos users are advised to watch for red or bloody urine, as well as pain in the lower back and abdomen. These symptoms could signify bladder cancer, and awareness of the symptoms can help patients realize the issue early, improving their possible treatment outcome.

The litigation against the manufacturers of Actos has taken the form of multidistrict litigation or MDL. An MDL is a type of group lawsuit, similar to the more familiar class action lawsuit. Group lawsuits like MDLs and class action lawsuits help streamline the legal process by allowing a group of allegedly-injured parties to seek civil action against the same defendant. The main difference is that class action lawsuits typically start out as group lawsuits, while MDLs usually start out as individual lawsuits that are later coordinated into a single legal action. MDLs are more common than class action lawsuits in drug litigation, since drugs are typically spread across a the country.

The Actos MDL is formally titled In Re: Actos (Piglitazone)Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2299, filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Louisiana.

In general, Actos bladder cancer lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
