Second Dollar Rent A Car Class Action Lawsuit Filed Over Unauthorized Charges
By Mike Holter
Dollar Rent A Car has been slammed with another class action lawsuit accusing it of charging customers for services they specifically declined during the rental process.Dr. Allen Friedman of Florida claims in the latest Dollar Rent A Car class action lawsuit that he rented a car from a Dollar facility at Denver International Airport on November 20, 2011. Friedman says he told Dollar employees that the did not want any additional insurance on the vehicle, but when he checked his receipt after returning the car, he found he was charged more than $250 for insurance coverage he specifically declined and for roadside assistance – an option he says he wasn’t even offered, according to the class action lawsuit.
Friedman says he contacted a Dollar supervisor about the unauthorized charges but was told there was nothing they could do because they had an electronic signature from him accepting the insurance coverage. Friedman says in the class action lawsuit that he never signed for this coverage and that his signature was forged by a Dollar employee.
These are the same allegations raised in a Dollar signature scam class action lawsuit filed in California, which alleges Dollar employees obtain signatures through “trickery, fraud and outright forgery” in order to get up to 12% commission on the sales of insurance and other additional products.
"This is a case where Dollar has organized a scheme to defraud consumers to increase revenues," Friedman says in the Dollar Rent A Car class action lawsuit, which is seeking more than $5 million for a proposed class of consumers who have rented from Dollar.
"The company's employees and agents constantly trick consumers into buying insurance they did not want.”
Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, which does business as Dollar Rent A Car, says it "denies the allegations and intends to defend the case vigorously."
The latest Dollar Signature Scam Class Action Lawsuit case is Allen Friedman v. Dollar Thrifty Automotive Group, Inc., et al., Case No. 12-cv-2432, Colorado District Court.
