Redline Energy Drink Class Action Lawsuit

By Kimberly Mirando

Redline Xtreme Energy DrinkVital Pharmaceuticals, Inc., the makers of VPX Redline energy drink, has been hit with a class action lawsuit claiming the product hospitalized the Plaintiff with “adverse side effects [that] resembled a cocaine overdose.” The class action lawsuit accuses the company of deceptively marketing Redline as a safe source of energy while being fully aware that the drink can cause extreme adverse health effects, including chills, vomiting, convulsions, chest pain and rapid heartbeat.

Texas resident Adam Mirabella alleges in the Redline class action lawsuit that he purchased a bottle of VPX Redline Xtreme Energy Drink last July at a gas station in Cedar Park, Texas. After drinking just one serving of the product, Mirabella’s heart began racing and “he suffered extreme chest pain that felt like a heart attack, he lost sensation in his hands, and he had extreme nausea,” the class action lawsuit says.

Mirabella says he was hospitalized and required two days of sedation after drinking the Redline energy drink. According to his class action lawsuit, Redline is unsafe due a number of ingredients that “are notable for the adverse effects they cause to humans that go well beyond the goal… of energy enhancement.”

In addition to containing extremely high concentrations of caffeine, Redline also contains a wide variety of energy-enhancing ingredients, including Yohimbine, 5-HTP, evodiamine, tyrosine, and vinpocetine. According to the Redline class action lawsuit, the product’s nutrition label lists these ingredients in type that is hard to read and is smaller than the lettering required by the Food and Drug Administration.

The Redline class action lawsuit comes at a time when energy drinks are under increased scrutiny from media and government officials. The FDA revealed last week that Monster Energy Drinks have been cited in at least five deaths over the last year. The family of one of these victims, a 14-year-old girl who died of a caffeine overdose, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against Monster over their daughter’s death. The girl allegedly drank two Monster energy drinks before suffering “cardiac arrhythmia due to caffeine toxicity,” according to the lawsuit.

The FDA is investigating the deaths and has been pressured to consider placing caffeine limits on energy drinks after emergency room visits involving these products jumped 10-fold from 2005 through 2009.

The Redline Energy Drink Class Action Lawsuit case is Adam Mirabella v. Vital Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Case No. 12-cv-62086, Florida Southern District Court, Fort Lauderdale.

UPDATE 6/19/13: A federal judge denied Vital Pharmaceuticals’ motion to dismiss the Redline Energy Drink Class Action Lawsuit, allowing it to proceed.

I have been drinking Redline energy drinks regular since about 2015. Sometimes I drink 3 or 4 of the double serving bottles a day. I have never had any undesired side effects, yeah your heart starts beating faster, and your body temp rises. Both things that happen when you start working out. Do you sue the gym? No. You made the choice to put something in your body without knowing what is in it or how it’s going to effect you. I am fine and in great health and will personally not stop drinking Redlines until they’re pulled off the shelf. And if that seems to be getting close to happening I will be stocking up. I swear by these drinks and constantly recommend them to anyone i see buying energy drinks at the store. LONG LIVE REDLINES

I’ve been using redline for several years on a when desperately needed bases. No its not for everyday use and you need to be responsible when you drink it. Only drink the recommended amount. Or less. If you have health problems or are allergic DON’T DRINK IT! Petty people tune it for others.

    1. Brundi Griffith says:

I use it for energy but. I had chest pains(rapid heart rate ) stomach problems and very bad headache

Your clearly some bonehead who thinks he knows everything but the fact is most energy drink related deaths are from extremely healthy people and people who are used to energy drinks and don’t overdose. So you should remove the stick up your but and have respect for the dead. It’s people like you who ruin this world.

You’re correct that most people who die from them are very healthy. A better idea than using those drinks is to prioritize getting adequate sleep. Sleep is extremely important for mood and general mental function.

  5. Shane Powell says:

It’s amazing to me people buy energy drinks knowing the chances they take especially if they’re in bad health or they have heart problems but anytime there’s a lawsuit on anyting if the energy drink different drugs whatever it is people just sign out on up trying to make that money and sad nowadays people sue for anything possible if you know something bad for you when I try wine drink it and why Sue afterwards when you have bad experience with it.

i got this on a few occasions. It’s either hit or miss. I have a high caffeine tolerance, but even with that a good portion of the time I get the same effects as the guy without hospitalization at least.

  7. sammy hewett says:

Is this lawsuit still active? I didn’t go to the hospital, but I confined less than the suggested serving and have had some side affects over the last few days…Got sent home and missed a big day at work too.
