Johnson's Baby PowderThe number of Johnson’s Baby Powder lawsuits are on the rise across the nation as women continue to allege they developed ovarian cancer after using Johnson & Johnson’s brand talcum powder.

Many female consumers filing baby powder lawsuits or joining existing baby powder class action lawsuits have backed their claims by citing medical research studies linking the use of talcum powder on the genital area with increased risk of ovarian cancer among women. These cases have gone largely unaddressed by talcum powder manufacturers for years, but large talcum powder producers like J&J may face thousands of potential baby powder lawsuits a year.

In October 2013, a South Dakota jury found in the case of 56 year old woman who had used J&J Baby Powder for decades that there was sufficient evidence to link talcum powder use on the genital area with development of ovarian cancer.

Harvard University’s Daniel Cramer was quoted as testifying that he had been seeking links between talc and ovarian cancer for 30 years. He also testified that that talcum powder could be the cause in as many 10,000 cases of ovarian cancer annually.

The American Cancer Society, along with various medical researchers, a few years ago began warning female consumers of the potential dangers of using talc powders on the genitals, a common practice adopted by many women to keep the area fresh and clean. As a safer alternative, women have been advised to use corn starch.

Additionally, the World Health Organization’s division the International Agency for Research on Cancer has classified talc powder as a possible carcinogen when used on the genital area.

Research Links Talc-Based Baby Powder to Increased Cancer Risk

As early as the 1960s, medical researchers have studied the use of talcum powder on the genital area and have demonstrated scientific evidence revealing a causal link between talc products and an increased risk of ovarian cancer. These studies have shown case after case of how talc powder can and will migrate from the initial application area in the exterior genitals to an individual’s ovaries. In a 1971 study, talc particles were found deeply embedded in 10 of 13 ovarian tumors.

Since then, 21 additional studies have conducted research and collected data that has confirmed again the original hypothesis that the use of talc powder can increase a woman’s risk of developing ovarian cancer. Many of these studies were also replicated in other countries besides the U.S.

In general, baby powder cancer lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
