Apple customers who purchased an iPad 3G before June 7, 2010 are receiving $40 checks in the mail this week from a 2010 class action lawsuit accusing Apple Inc. and AT&T Mobility LLC of falsely advertising that the iPad 3G had “unlimited” data.
The money is from a class action settlement reached in 2013 that was granted final approval on March 11, 2014. As part of the deal, Apple and AT&T admitted no wrongdoing but agreed to provide cash refunds of up to $40 to consumers for each iPad 3G they purchased. Consumers will also receive an AT&T data plan at a discounted monthly rate of $30 per month for up to one year — a savings of $20 off the $50/month 5GB data plan.
Eligible consumers had to file a valid Claim Form by Feb. 3, 2014 in order to receive these benefits from the iPad unlimited data plan class action settlement. [See our detailed claim filing instructions.]
The iPan unlimited data plan settlement checks were mailed July 18 and come with the following letter:
“Enclosed is a check in the amount of $40.00 representing your settlement in the award of Apple & AT&T iPad Unlimited Data Plan Litigation. The amount of your settlement award has been calculated pursuant to the terms of the Settlement that was approved by the court. Pursuant to the terms of the settlement, the enclosed check must be cashed by October 16, 2014; after that date, the check will be void and will not be reissued. If you have any questions, you can contact the Settlement Administrator at 1–800–248–1504.”
