blood thinning medication, Xarelto side effectsBoth Pradaxa and Xarelto are new-generation anticoagulants, or blood thinners. Unfortunately, Xarelto bleeding lawsuits are on the rise, as are concerns that the newer drugs are less safe than older blood thinners.

Anticoagulants like Xarelto and Pradaxa are designed to make it harder for a person to form blood clots. In a healthy body, under normal conditions, blood clots are healthy, and are a critical part of the healing process to stop a person from bleeding to death.

However, for various medical reasons, blood clots can form within the body. These errant clots can lodge become lodged within the body, and block the blood supply to critical organs and tissues. For example, when such a blood clot lodges in the brain, they can cause strokes.

Drugs like Xarelto are designed to impair the ability to form blood clots in patients with a high risk for strokes, pulmonary embolisms, and other clot-related health problems. However, anticoagulants carry risks of their own.

All anticoagulants carry the risk of dangerous uncontrollable bleeding events. In this scenario, blood loses its ability to clot as well as it typically does. In this state, a person can die from a very minor injury, often from an internal wound.

In older anticoagulants like Warfarin, the drug can be effectively turned off by a high dose of vitamin K. Thus, in patients on Warfarin, doctors can shut down the drug if a patient experiences a dangerous bleeding event.

However, newer drugs like Xarelto promote themselves as not requiring the constant blood testing required by Warfarin, or the dietary restrictions (i.e. avoiding foods high in vitamin K). But the rash of serious bleeding incidents and uncontrollable bleeding lawsuits have alleged that these newer drugs, with no reversal agents, are more dangerous than older anticoagulants.

Pradaxa was the flagship drug of this new class of anticoagulants when it hit the market in 2011. When problems began to emerge, much legal action like Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits—have focused on this drug.

However, a new report by the Institute for Safe Medicine Practices (ISMP) has revealed that Xarelto has surpassed Pradaxa in sales and reported medical Xarelto complications. This includes reported incidents of lethal bleeding episodes. According to the ISMP report, 2,081 serious Xarelto complications have been reported and at least 151 deaths, allegedly caused by this newer generation blood thinner.

The legal action over Xarelto and Pradaxa could take the form of a group lawsuit, like a Xarelto class action lawsuit. Group lawsuits, like a class action lawsuit, are designed to help streamline the legal process by combining tens, hundreds, or even thousands of potential individual Xarelto lawsuits into a single legal action.

In general, Xarelto lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
