Risperdal Drug LawsuitAn important step in the Risperdal breast growth litigation is scheduled for next month.

Since hundreds of individual Risperdal breast growth lawsuits have been filed, these cases have been grouped together in a type of group legal proceeding called a multidistrict litigation, or MDL. MDLs help to streamline the lawsuit by combining tens, hundreds, or even thousands, of individual lawsuits into a single coordinated MDL. But MDLs periodically require meetings like this one to organize the litigation.

Risperdal is a second-generation antipsychotic, a drug designed to treat schizophrenia without the side effects of earlier drugs like Thorazine. The drug has also been tested and approved to treat aggression and irritability associated with autism, as well as bipolar disorder. However, newer drugs like Risperdal have been associated with their own unusual side affects, according to Risperdal lawsuits.

The various Risperdal breast growth lawsuits allege that the drug can cause a condition called gynecomastia, or “man boobs.” Specifically, Risperdal lawsuits allege that Risperdal can increase prolactin levels, particularly in young male patients. This can cause them to grow female-like breasts. The Risperdal lawsuits allege that patients have required liposuction and other surgical procedures to correct the side effects of the drug. Several clinical studies have also supported the claim that Risperdal can cause male breast growth.

The makers of Risperdal have been embroiled in another related legal action over off-label usage. The drug’s makers, Johnson & Johnson, settled a case with the U.S. Justice Department over allegations that they marketed Risperdal for uses other than those approved by the FDA, including ADHD and dementia. The settlement was for more than $2.5 million.

Risperdal lawsuits typically seek a variety of types of legal relief. This includes asking that the drug’s manufacturers pay for the medical costs associated with the drug, including reconstructive surgery, lost wages from medical downtime, and compensation for pain, suffering, and the psychological harm of a male growing female-like breasts. Additionally, Risperdal lawsuits may seek punitive damages.

The Risperdal Male Breast Growth MDL is In re: Risperdal Litigation, Case No. 100300296, in the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas.

In general, Risperdal lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
