The bonus checks are in addition to payments that went out the last week of March, which ranged from $70 to over $1,000.

The Settlement Administrator for the Brazilian Blowout class action settlement hasn’t provided an update on the settlement site (www.brazilianblowoutsettlement.com), but the bonus checks may be extra settlement money that was left over in the settlement fund after the initial distribution.

GIB LLC, the manufacturer of the Brazilian Blowout hair straightening product, agreed in 2013 to pay $4 million to resolve multiple class action lawsuits over claims the product was falsely labeled as containing “no harsh chemicals.”

Multiple salon works and customers sued GIB after it was discovered the product emits formaldehyde gas, despite representations that the product was “formaldehyde-free.” In addition to false advertising claims, plaintiffs alleged they suffered from a variety of health problems allegedly caused by Brazilian Blowout, including eye irritation, headaches, dizziness, throat irritation, chest pain, vomiting, and more.

GIB denied any wrongdoing but established a $4 million class action settlement fund to resolve the litigation and pay out claims for purchases and medical expenses.

Under the agreement, stylists could receive $75 for each purchase of a Brazilian Blowout product and consumers could receive $35 for each Brazilian Blowout treatment they received (up to a maximum of $105).

Class Members with documented proof that they suffered health problems from Brazilian Blowout were also eligible to claim up to $2,000 in medical expenses reimbursement.

The deadline to file a claim for the Brazilian Blowout class action settlement was Sept. 23, 2013.

TopClassActions.com has been reporting on the settlement since it was reached in 2012.
