Vistaprint Customers Complain of Deceptive Billing Practices
By Jessica Tyner
You’ve probably heard of Vistaprint, one of the biggest e-commerce sites for personalized marketing materials. Vistaprint.com offers a variety of products including business cards, website design and collateral materials for tradeshows complete with customized logos. In 2012, there were nearly 30 million orders and millions of new customers.
The motto of this company is “Make an impression,” but according to some California consumers, that impression isn’t a very good one.
Vistaprint has been the target of multiple lawsuits and class action lawsuits for allegedly overcharging customers through deceptive billing practices. Vistaprint settled a class action lawsuit in 2005 in California after consumers rallied over excessive shipping and handling charges — a direct violation of law in the state. The company never did admit to that wrong doing, but instead offered free business cards via a coupon campaign as part of a class action lawsuit settlement.
The company faced yet another class action lawsuit in 2009, but that one was dismissed. The heart of that fledgling Vistaprint class action lawsuit concerned discount programs. Despite successfully dodging that class action lawsuit, Vistaprint may be facing a new one. The latest murmurings concern deceptive marketing along with illegal practices under the law of California.
