Common Birth Injuries and Their Causes
By Amanda Antell
It is currently estimated that 3% of the children born in the United States suffer from one or more birth injury. Children born with minor injuries sometimes recover soon after the birth while others suffer a lifetime of medical treatments and disabilities.
It has been discovered that most birth injuries are completely avoidable, which has led to many mothers and families suing hospitals for the negligent conduct of their doctors.
- Cerebral Palsy
- Oxygen Deprivation
- Mental Retardation
- Erb’s Palsy
- Klumpke’s Palsy
- Brachial Plexus
Birth injuries typically occur during the delivery process itself, whether the baby is removed from the abdomen or is pushed out through the vagina. Complications during delivery can lead to birth injuries and possibly death for both the mother and child, which is why it is recommended most doctors identify potential problems as quickly as possible during the birthing procedure.
The most common causes for birth injuries are:
- Oxygen deprivation: Occurs when the umbilical cord is compressed or twisted, and wraps around the neck of the baby. Oxygen deprivation can also result from leaving the baby in the birth canal for too long.
- Failure to diagnose and properly treat seizures.
- Failure to diagnose a Meconium Aspiration Syndrome: Occurs when the infant inhales its own fecal matter and amniotic fluid; if this occurs, fetal stress is prominent before delivery.
- Mechanical trauma: Occurs when the fetus is in an unusual position at the time of delivery, or if the baby is too large to pass through the birth canal.
- Excessive force or improper rotational force during the delivery process.
- Excessive or improper use of vacuum extraction.
- Failure to properly monitor and respond to changes in the mother’s condition.
- Improper tube insertion: When the newborn requires oxygen but is deprived due to latent reaction.
It is the doctor’s responsibility to safely deliver the baby, and it is the hospital’s responsibility to ensure proper procedure is implemented for a safe birth. Women across America are suing doctors and hospitals for not following these obligations.
