Wine Drinkers Suing Mad Over Fake Pinot Noir
By Sarah Pierce
If you’re waiting to enjoy that ’06 bottle of “Red Bicyclette” Pinot Noir, you might want to reconsider. It’s probably a cheap red table wine, not the more expensive Pinot Noir vintage you were hoping to enjoy.
A class action lawsuit has been filed against French winemakers and a U.S. importer for selling millions of bottles of fake Pinot Noir to the United States. The lawsuit comes on the heels of a French court ruling that found 12 French winemakers guilty of purposely mislabeling cheap wine under the false label of Pinot Noir for at least three years and importing it to the United States.
The bulk of the fake Pinot Noir was sold by E. & J. Gallo under its popular Pinot Noir label “Red Bicyclette.” There’s no evidence that Gallo was part of the fraud and Gallo believes only the 2006 and 2005 vintages of “Red Bicyclette” were affected.
The class action suit was filed by California lawyer Brian Levine, who is representing all California consumers who purchased the falsely labeled wine. The lawsuit does not specify the amount of damages being sought.
