Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart Sued for Selling Toxic Baby Shampoo

By Sarah Pierce

Baby Shampoo

If you purchased Johnson & Johnson’s Baby Shampoo or Wal-Mart brand Equate Tearless Baby Wash, you may want to stop using it. A class action lawsuit has been approved this month that claims these products may contain a toxin linked to cancer.

The class action lawsuit, filed earlier this year, accuses Johnson & Johnson and Wal-Mart Stores of selling shampoo and baby wash that allegedly contains methylene chloride, an ingredient banned by the FDA in cosmetics because it’s linked to cancer. The law firm that filed the lawsuit is also investigating Target’s Night-time Bath and Body Wash, which is not currently named in the suit.

A third Johnson & Johnson plant is now also under investigation for alleged quality concerns. The new Johnson & Johnson plant is one that manufactures Pepcid and Mylanta among other products. You can read the details on that investigation at Legafi.

  1. Is this legit? Is there actually a carcinogen in the product and what are they saying to use as an alternative?
  2. Use natural products - not usually sold in stores - avoid parabens, 1,4 dioxane, synthetic fragrances, SLS, MIT, anything ending in "cone" and anything with a whole bunch of numbers in the ingredient name! If you aren't sure check EWG database to check them out.8-)
  3. Use California Baby products, or anything else that contains only ingredients you can pronounce. So glad I never put that stuff on my baby. Just because it's what our parents used on us, doesn't mean it's the best.
  4. There are a number of alternatives to Johnson's & Johnson's. You can try Arbonne's ABC Baby Care Line - these products are Vegan Certified, PETA approved and made from herbal and botanical ingredients. Visit arbonne.ca or aliyajackson.myarbonne.ca
  5. Enter any products you have to see how good or bad they are at www.cosmeticsdatabase.org - Enviornmental Working Group (EWG) does fantastic work! They give you a # (zero the best to 10) to see how toxic anything your using maybe. Another site I like too to investigate toys for kids is www.healthystuff.org from Cars to Carseats.
  6. yep, Arbonne's Baby Care products work the best for us, and the best part is, i know they're safe!
  7. Just Sunday night my aunt was showing me her 4 year olds back and arms that are permanently scarred from using the Johnson & Johnson soap this past year. It's bad scarring. Wonder how they can be added to this class action?
  8. Does this lawsuit include Aveeno products? They are also Johnson&Johnson.
  9. im with Ruth..does this include ALL Johnson & Johnson products or just that specific shampoo? this really freaks me out and ticks me off!
  10. USE ARBONNE PRODUCTS! they are he safest on the market! They have sun block safe enough to use on a new born, which is the ONLY sun block on the market you can do that with!:-*
  11. i have 2 kids my youngest her scalp is so dry noyhing will help and all i used was johnsons my oldest her skin is so dry and she has marks on her body i have used johnsons on them for 5 and a half years what am i to do
  12. @alice....apply and rub a little bit of olive or coconut oil into your daughters scalp before she goes to bed. No need to rinse it out. When you wash her hair use a gentle all-natural shampoo. We use Nature's Gate baby shampoo: http://www.amazon.com/Natures-Gate-Rainwater-Shampoo-liquid/dp/B000I4AC60.
  13. Use Water! babies and kids don't need soap at all, even the natural stuff. Soap strips the natural oils off skin and then the body produces more oils to replace them... it is a viscous cycle. And no, not using soap doesn't mean not clean.
  14. I trrusted Shaklee products for my babies. They are safe, and they will never be recalled ! Science is behind all the products and the most natural ingredients are used. :-)
  15. OMGoodness!! I have used this on my 8 year old daughter since she was born!! Besides, from throwing it away, what else can the consumer do about this?
  16. Hey Folks! Thanks for all of the comments! Please note, if you're pitching your own product (i.e., Shaklee) and link to your own website your comment will be deleted. We're happy to see people discussing options but if you want to advertise you'll need to do it directly through us or Google AdWords. Feel free to continue to have a healthy discussion, but, don't shill your own stuff. 8-) Thanks, TCA Staff
  17. [img][/img]]I have been using Johnson's Baby Shampoo for the past 3 yrs or more for Dry Eye Syndrome per by ophthalmologist, also, use prescription eye drops for this condition.
  18. I have been using Johnson Baby Shampoo for more than 3 yrs. for Dry Eyes Syndrome per recommendation by my Ophthalmologist in addition to using prescription eye drops after cleansing with Johnson Baby Shampoo.
  19. Hey Everyone, I have studied the toxins in the over the counter products for over four years. I can send you a free toxin report that will help educate you. Just ask at: lsanow@knology.net
  20. I don't understand why people need to feel so important that it's necessary to police people in what they can or cannot say here. I don't know who is trying to sell something, but why do others care. If they have something to offer or help another, what business is it of yours to dictate what is appropriate or not>:o
  21. @Julie The people "policing" the advertising on this page would be the owners - Top Class Actions. I think that gives them the right. They only deleted the posts that were posting their affiliate links. People shouldn't take advantage of a parents panic to try and sell them a product. Thanks, Savanah
  22. Is it only the regular baby shampoo? I have the calming lavender shampoo and the extra conditioning shampoo but I do not see that ingredient or the other name that it is known by (Dichloromethane). Are they still using this in their current products or just ones made before they were caught?
  23. Did anyone else notice that the last time it was updated was August 2010? Is there any current information?
  24. As washing baby's hair is always a challenge, it is important that this shampoo is really gentle on eyes. The fact that it does not sting when getting in the eyes makes getting their hair washed a little easier task. And a trick I discovered after my son started walking - washing hair in the shower is so much easier than doing it in the bathtub! With some products I do not like to experiment with, I try to go with products that minimize the chance of not working, and are recommended by true friends or doctors. I asked my doctor about baby shampoo and then all my friends. Shielo is the only brand I trust on my baby's skin, specifically their Shielo Hydrate Shampoo and Shielo Hydrate Vibrancy Conditioner.
  25. ...some useful information but like most things when it comes to our newborns, us parents have to get through the smoke screens and information given by companies out to earn money! Who do we believe? Each babies experience is probably different from another due to their own skin type etc! But I think that there should be tougher guidelines in the US as is the case by some other European counties! Unfortunately It seems to be all about the Benjamins with these large corporations noadays!
  26. Thank you Savannah for reinforcing why people shouldn't push their "products" on us on this site. I get so tired of people who sell Arbonne trying to shove their over priced products down our throats. There are plenty of cheaper healthy options out there. Such as the Method baby line, Burt's bees and even Costco has a line of organic body wash. Parents need to do their research and know what we are putting on our kids, but we don't have to spend an arm and leg to do it.
  27. We stay away from Johnson & Johnson. Organic castile soap and coconut oil are all you need.
  28. my grand daughter face and body is breaking out like a rash and has been like that every sence she was a baby and now she is two and still has a rash.
  29. Doesn't everything cause cancer now a days? My kids are 10 and 13 never had issues... But like I said anymore everything causes cancer anymore... It's getting redundant!
  30. Used Johnson and Johnson No More Tears, Nighttime Calming Lavender, and now Aveeno for 3 yrs. Love their products and my son is just fine. Sorry if other people had a bad experience, but it's like Pampers; some kids can't wear them because of the rash they get, others do fine. When are they going to get sued? They're the only diaper that goes to size 7 and for the special needs community this is important. Not every kid has a bad reaction. I'm lactose intolerant, but if "dairy" is not listed on something, I'm not going to sue.""
  31. Just learn to read labels. If you don't know what the ingredient is then take the time to do the research. I have multiple chemical sensitivities and have learned over time certain ingredients cause me problems. Don't forget all natural does not necessarily mean it is safe.
  32. its not about rashes, its about future cancers firstly, secondly many things DO cause cancer so why would you not want to protect your babies from this??
  33. I am very sad to here this news i will not used any more !!!!
  34. For naturally derived products, not just baby products, but for your whole household, email me for information and a no obligation webinar from the comfort of your home. Alot of your household products, the products that you use to clean your home or your spray into the air to freshen your home have carcinogens. Email me for more information of how to replace these products and save money in the long run. LivingInWellness@comcast.net
