If you got a little more “boost” that you bargained for by taking the sports nutritional supplement Nutrex “Ignite,” “Lipo-6 Hers” or “Lipo-6 Black,” you’re not imagining things. That “all natural” pre-workout boost actually comes from a pharmaceutical drug that’s similar to speed.
According to a potential class action lawsuit, Nutrex advertises these products as containing a cocktail of “natural” stimulants that allow people to burn fat and lose weight, when in fact it contains an “illegal ‘designer drug’ that is banned in numerous countries.” The ingredient in question is “methylsynephrine,” which is another name for a prescription drug called Oxilofrine, a stimulant drug in the amphetamine class that’s used to treat low blood pressure. The class action lawsuit claims “Nutrex is and has been aware that the ‘methylsynephrine’ in the products is actually the drug Oxilofrine” because it “is common knowledge in the sports nutrition industry, given the suspension of numerous athletes who took purported ‘dietary supplements’ containing methylsynephrine and then tested positive for the banned substance Oxilofrine.”
If the lawsuit is granted class action status, it will demand that Nutrex cease its fraudulent advertising claims and pay restitution and damages to class members.
