Fosamax side effectsA jury awarded a Florida woman $8 million last week, four years after she sued Merck & Co. claiming the drug company’s osteoporosis drug Fosamax damaged her jaw. The win represents a major victory as it is the first of nearly 900 lawsuits pending against Merck by nearly 1,280 patient groups who claim Fosamax damaged their jawbone tissue.

Class action lawsuits concerning Fosamax have already popped up in Canada, and last week’s win could open the door to major class action lawsuits in the United States as well. Patients claim Fosamax, a prescription medication used to treat and prevent osteoporosis by increasing bone density and strength, actually deteriorates some bones, causing a condition known as osteonecrosis of the jaw (or death of jawbone tissue) and contributing to femur fractures. Merck denies these allegations and claims Fosamax is a safe and effective medication. [Reuters]

  1. Dorise Hendricks says:

I was on Fosomax during the early 2000’s and had to stop taking it in 2009 because I developed a hole in my esophagus even though I followed the directions and would take the medication when I was starting my day. Is there any lawsuit for this type of injury? I never had any gastrointestinal problems until taking Fosomax for about 4 years.

  2. Shari says:

I was prescribed Fosamax approximately September 2011 and stopped in May 2014. Both condyles of my jaw are gone and the osteonecrosis is spreading to the rest of my mandible. My jaw is pushed up and back, only my 4 back molars touch when my mouth is closed and there’s a one-half inch gap between my upper and lower front teeth. Chewing and speaking are difficult and I’m in pain. If you cannot help me, please refer me to someone who can. Thank you.

My father was on this medication, and in two years time, has broken both femurs and his osteoporosis is worse now than before

  4. George Hoskins says:

6 or 8 years ago I had four dental implants in my upper part of my mouth and they kept loosening. The dentist did them over again and they still came out causing great discomfort and expense. Is this type of injury of interest? Thank you, G. Hoskins

It has been 10 years since I used Fosamax. My complaints to my MD regarding constantly changing eyesight were ignored. I had 4 changes of prescriptions during a 2 yr period; the eye MD wrote my MD and requested I be checked for diabetics, which was negative. I refused to continue the fosamax and the problem disappeared. I wouldn’t mind being reimbursed for the cost of the glasses.

I am interested in a class action lawsuit on the drug fosamax in Canada.I took Fosamax for about 10 years and broke my left leg femer on November 31,2010.My right leg femer has a stress fracture.Over the last three years I have had a lot of pain in my legs and have fallen down at least three times over time within the last three years and broke my leg.I was told by my doctor and others that this drug was was great for those who have osteoprosesis and was not told about any side affects and I am totally peeved off that this happened and I was and still very careful about what I do and where I go.I’m interested in getting more info about this lawsuit.
