Gateway LX6810 Cooling System Class Action
By Kimberly Mirando

GatewayDozens of consumers have complained about their Gateway LX6810 desktop computers overheating and randomly freezing, crashing or shutting down, causing them to lose valuable data in addition to time and money fixing the problem. Now a recently filed class action lawsuit is accusing Gateway, Inc. of violating state business laws by marketing, selling and refusing to recall or repair the LX6810 computers, even though they know the computers have a defective cooling system.

Four plaintiffs from Texas, New Hampshire, Illinois and California filed the consolidated Gateway LX6810 class action lawsuit, alleging that an inherent defect in the desktop computers causes them to overheat under normal operating conditions, resulting in the computer suddenly freezing, crashing or shutting down completely. This allegedly occurs because the computer’s cooling fan does not sufficiently cool its central processing unit (CPU) and/or component parts. According to the Gateway LX6810 class action, the defective cooling system begins to manifest itself within only a few months of the beginning of its use, forcing users to incur out-of-pocket costs and time attempting to resolve the cooling system defect.

Plaintiffs in the class action accuse Gateway of knowing about the cooling system defect but of refusing to recall the Gateway LX6810 desktop computer or permanently repairing the defective cooling system at its own expense. They are seeking certification of a nationwide class of U.S. consumers who currently own or lease, or previously owned or leased, a Gateway LX6810 desktop computer. If certified, the Gateway defective cooling system class action lawsuit will be seeking damages, restitution, attorneys’ fees, and other awards in the class action settlement.

Gateway LX6810 Cooling System Class Action

I’m having the same problem with my Gateway Model #LX6810-01. I have lost a lot of files because it shuts down with no warning. It also shuts down when I’m doing research on the Internet and has caused me endless problems.

So how is the lawsuit coming…..let me guess, everybody gets the shaft & no money for new fans

  3. Stephen Manning says:

I have one of these clunkers. When it first manifested itself I bought a battery backup and wasted a whole lot of time and troubleshooting. I am a computer network engineer so I am not a rookie. The only way to keep it running was to put some of the cooling liquid on the CPU every few months. I couldn’t find the Dynex brand silver liquid so I am now using some Insignia liquid that isn’t working.

This is my last Gateway. I won’t even consider buying them for the business I work in. I would love to join a lawsuit. This is the most aggravating PC I ever owned. Even when it was new it did this. Gateway, naturally claimed that I was the only one reporting this problem. You can’t trust anyone.

I have the same computer and it’s been doing the same thing. shutting down all of the time. it’s been a problem. I’ve found that using compressed air to clean the fan/heatsink seems to be a temporary fix but I would like to know what fan or fans I should buy to fix this. I wish i had seen the class action suit before now.

  5. Kathy says:

I also have the LX6810 Gateway computer and I have put up with so much trouble of it shutting down. Best Buy isn’t any help. Charging me for the repair and within a month or so it’s shutting down again. Can I get into the lawsuit or is it too late. Can someone please tell me how I can fix this thing?

  6. Doug English says:

I have had this about 4 years and its been a great machine.. until I had it about 18 mos and the sudden shutdowns started. I replaced PSU and ran it with the side off and that seemed to help…. then it shutdown completely. I got it booted again and before it completed, it stopped, like the power cord had been pulled out. and now.. NOTHING ! what was the decision on the class action and is it too late for a remedy ??

  7. Angela A Smith says:

My gateway LX6810-01 would not even run when I purchased it. It was missing memory and later another issue being repaired by Geek squad. Since the computer kept shutting down and my husband bought a replacement part. Worked for about 6 months . Now the computer is shutting down by itself often. This should not happen to a $800.00 computer.

    1. Kathy says:

I also have the same exact issue. I can’t get any answers. Too much money for such problems. Have you gotten any help?
