Best Buy Dryer Installation Settlement
By Sarah Pierce

Best BuyBest Buy put its customers at risk for fire and even death by ignoring the installation warning attached to certain model clothes dryers it sold and installed, according to a recently settled class action lawsuit. If you purchased a clothes dryer from Best Buy that was delivered and hooked up using a foil transition duct/vent, you may be able to receive a free replacement vent or a reimbursement for any out-of-pocket expenses you paid to replace the vent from the class action lawsuit settlement.

The Best Buy dryer installation settlement resolves a class action lawsuit, entitled Frankle v. Best Buy Stores, L.P., that alleges Best Buy sold certain model clothes dryers and then delivered and installed them using metal foil transition ducts/vents. Apparently using metal foil vents is strictly prohibited by the dryer manufacturers, which warn in the enclosed owner’s manuals and attached warning stickers that doing so can result in death or fire.

This is the second class action lawsuit settlement we’ve reported on in the past month concerning a major retailer improperly installing clothes dryers using unsafe ducts or vents. (Check out the Lowe’s Dryer Duct Installation Class Action Settlement here.)

Under the Best Buy dryer class action lawsuit settlement, you can receive one of two settlement benefits: have the foil vent replaced with heavy metal or semi-rigid metal transition duct/vent, or obtain reimbursement of any out-of-pocket expenses you already paid to have the foil vent replaced. In order to receive any of these class action settlement benefits, you must have purchased a clothes dryer from Best Buy between October 14, 2002 and January 12, 2009, had it installed or arranged to be installed by Best Buy, and had it installed with a metal foil transition duct/vent.

In order to receive any of these benefits from the Best Buy dryer vent/duct settlement, you must submit a valid claim form postmarked no later than December 1, 2010.
