Navistar, Inc. has been hit with five class action lawsuits stemming from “design and manufacturing” defects in truck engines it made for Ford Motor Co. The engines in question are known as Ford’s Power Stroke V8 Turbo diesel engines, which power the diesel versions of Ford’s F Super Duty diesel trucks and Ford Excursions.

 

According to one of the Navistar class action lawsuits, filed by Brandon Burns in federal court in California, “The Navistar-designed and manufactured engine powering Ford vehicles has been plagued by serious and pervasive design and manufacturing defects that render the engines and vehicles unmerchantable and unsuitable for use.”

 

These problems are so serious that even Ford has sued Navistar for failing to shoulder its responsibility for paying its share of the warranty costs that Ford has had to pay in connection with warranty claims filed by owners and lessees of Ford vehicles equipped with Navistar’s 6.0 L diesel engine, the class action says.

 

Burns’ class action lawsuit also names Ford Motor Company as a defendant for not only concealing these known defects from consumers but for also distributing advertisements that “touted and boasted about the superior qualities of the very engine that Ford had privately repudiated as being plagued by ‘unprecedented problems.’” These commercials continued to be distributed even during and after Ford sued Navistar.

 

The Burns et al. v. Navistar, Inc. and Ford Motor Company class action lawsuit is brought on behalf of all owners and lessees within California of Ford vehicles model years 2003 through 2007 equipped with Navistar’s 6.0 L diesel engine, commonly referred to as the Power Stroke V8 Turbo diesel engine.

 

Four other lawsuits seeking class action status have been filed against Navistar and Ford in Utah, Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi.

    I have a 2003 F-350 6.0 I bought used with 50K miles in Oct. of 2010. Also purchased a “so called good warranty” The turbo went out early this month and now the EGR cooler and oil cooler needs to be replaced. And yea, the warranty I have does’nt cover a damn thing. The truck now has only 80K miles on it. So the way I’m reading the settlement that was released this morning will not cover 80-85% of us out there due to age and or mileage of the vehicle,sad! So please tell me, where does this leave us now? (dieselsettlement.com) See for yourself.

    Have had two of these POS 6.0s.
    BOTH had HPOP (high pressure oil pump) replaced, one of them TWICE !!
    Now have a 57,000 mile truck with a BLOWN head gasket. NO chips, NO trailers, NO abuse. Just one day gone and we are still trying to figure out were to get the money to fix it.

    Original owner of 2005 F-350 6.0L diesel truck. Complete failure of turbo which also destroyed intercooler. More than $4,000 invested in engine related issues.

    We purchased our F-350 new and in the first 6 months the truck was in the shop fixing all kinds of issues. Now that it is out of warranty we are still fixing it. Now it lunges forward when we are stopped at a stoplight. If you don’t have your foot on the brake pedal hard you could run into the person in front of you. This truck sucks and when you take it in to Ford they know all the issues and know that it sucks. Just describe some of the symptoms and they say yes we know all about it.
