Details: The Samsung TV settlement will resolve a class action lawsuit, entitled Russell, et al. v., Samsung Electronics America, Inc., that alleges Samsung manufactured and sold certain Samsung-branded televisions that contain a capacitor defect that cause the televisions to experience symptoms such as not turning on, experiencing a delay in turning on, making a clicking sound, cycling on and off, or other similar problems (the “Covered TV Symptoms”).

 

Samsung denies the allegations in the class action lawsuit, but has agreed to settle the case to avoid ongoing litigation.

The television models covered under the Samsung TV capacitor settlement are:

Samsung LCD TV Serial Numbers: LN-T******/XAA; LN**A******XZA; LNS4041DX/XAA; LNS4051DX/XAA; LNS4052DX/XAA; LNS5296DX/XAA

Samsung Plasma TV Serial Numbers: HPT5034X/XAA; HPT5044X/XAA; HPT5054X/XAA; HPT5064X/XAA; PN42A410C1DXZA; PN42A450P1DXZA; PN50A410C1DXZA; PN50A450P1DXZA; PN50A460S4DXZA

If you own one of these Samsung TVs and experienced one or more of the Covered TV Symptoms listed above, or if you experience a Covered TV Symptom within 18 months after March 2, 2012, you can claim one of the following benefits from the Samsung TV class action lawsuit settlement:

(1) A free service visit to determine if your TV has a problem covered by the class action settlement and, if it does, to fix the problem. You must call (888) 899-7602 within 18 months from March 2, 2012 to receive this settlement benefit. If your TV requires more than one repair for a capacitor issue covered by the class action settlement, you will receive an additional $50 payment.

(2) A refund of expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to evaluate or diagnose the problem covered by the class action settlement (up to $150). You must submit proof that your TV has a Covered TV Symptom (such as a receipt, bill cancelled check or credit card charge, correspondence, verification from repair provider) before March 2, 2013 to receive this settlement benefit.

(3) A refund of expenses you incurred, prior to March 2, 2012, to fix the problem covered by the class action settlement (up to $150 to fix the capacitor issue or $300 if the repair included replacing a power supply board). You can also receive up to $150 to cover shipping expenses, including insurance costs, you incurred to fix the TV. You must submit a claim form and proof that your TV had a capacitor issue by March 2, 2013 to receive this settlement benefit.

(4) A $300 debit card if you reported to Samsung, prior to March 2, 2012, the problem covered by the class action settlement, but did not get it fixed, and you no longer possess your TV. You must submit a claim form and proof that you purchased a TV within 90 days of March 2, 2012 to get this settlement benefit.

In other words, a customer who repaired their Samsung TV may receive up to $600 for diagnosis, repairs, and shipping, plus $50 if they need more repairs; while a customer who no longer has the TV can still receive up to $450 for diagnosis and compensation.

Our tv stopped turning on. When called Samsung they told me the tv model was not on the list for the class action. It is a faulty capacitor, a newer model July 2009. Seems they never corrected the problem on the newer models and told me the warranty is expired and would have to pay out of pocket to fix it. I'm sure I'm not alone here. The model # is LN40B630N1FXZA. Is there another class action suit against Samsung for faulty capacitors on later models?

I have gotten the run around also by Samsung. My problem is red dots in the top center of the screen. They have tried everything to fix this problem but it never went away. Now after 2 years its getting worst. THIS NEEDS TO BE A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT! I see on the internet that this is a world wide problem. I have a:

I will never buy another Samsung product. I paid over $600 for a dishwasher in 2010 and it had to be repaired 3 times in less than a year. I called Samsung to get some help or see if they would exchange the product, however, they would not. They sent yet another repairman out to tell me the motor was burned out and there were no parts on the market. WHAT? The dishwasher was installed by Best Buy, never abused, and was used very little. It sat at my curb on garbage pick-up day less than a year old. NO MORE SAMSUNG!

I agree with #35 There needs to be another class action lawsuit filed.. I just posted on their facebook page, that I believe Samsung has a known issue and sold thousands of TV's on HSN knowing there was a defect. Come to find out the TV didn't even come with a standard 1 year manufacturers warranty. I'm very disappointed in Samsung.

We need to start another class action lawsuit for the additional models not covered by this lawsuit. Contact Federman & Sherwood to get enough clients and interest to get reimbursement for these defective televisions Samsung is creating in mass numbers and not willing to support. I tried to file under this lawsuit, but was denied by Samsung as they said my model was not included.

It seems to me if company's still sold their products with warranties like they did in the good ol' days where you bought something and it was warranted for at LEAST 3 years at no cost to the consumer, they wouldn't suffer these class actions.... No, I didn't file a claim here just sayin.....

I bought an Samsung back in 2004 I think it was, anyway, it was purchased from a store here in Texas called, Fryes Electronics Store and I am more convinced now that a lot of their merchandise is DEFECTIVE. I was a 31 in. I can't even remember the model#, but when I bought the first one it played beautifully for 3 days.....on the 4th day it would not even, come on. Loaded it on the truck and took it back to the store under the stores warranty, and traded it for a smaller one 28 inch I think. What do you know, after the store 90 day warranty, the same thing happens and I did not send in Samsung's. Samsung still made good on it as if I did. Told me to go ahead and take it back or they will give me a list of local repair techs, at no cost to me. Of course because this was the second problem with Samsung t.v, I took the first suggestion, and loaded it back on the truck again, and took it back but, then.....I traded it for a 28 in. Phillips, that was a 100 more difference..... ..I still have my Phillips, I wonder can I be compensated for all the problems Samsung gave me.

I have one of the models listed in the capacitor suit, but have had none of the problems listed. My defect is the white and black spots caused by a failed DMD chip. With all the other chip fails listed online, it seems another class action is warranted to cover this failing component as well. Samsung told me that my tv was not one of the ones listed by them as having DMD problems. Go figure. They also did not inform me that it WAS on the list for the capacitor class action. I am not happy with the level of care from Samsung.

I have (2) 50" Dell plasma TV's that are both dead Dell model number 5001CHD, when you pull the back cover off they are Samsung's #S50HW-YB01. Why weren't we notified about this class action suit when owning the Samsung product with the Dell name on it? Is there a suit against Dell and these plasma TV's?

thats great it is funny that I had a dell model that had the same problems spent 400 to have it fixed took that back off and it is a samsung with samsung name inside

My problem is the same as victor in #21. Same model # same problems. Very low hours, never abused, first the picture got dark, then went blank, still had audio. Now there is nothing. Too many consumers with the same type of problems. I feel we have been cheated and deserve compensation.

i have had 3 of these and had the same problem i took one of them back to walmart and they exchanged it but it still had the same thing happen so i didn't even bother with the other two and finally got rid of them

I called Samsung several times and was told to call the Samsung settlement dept. for help resolving the issue with the tv. I have a very expensive plasma tv. Model no. PN58A55OS1FXZA. After calling the claims dept. and holding for 15 minutes, I was told that my tv is not covered under the capacitor settlement. How is this possible? I have the exact same problems they outline in the settlement. The tv was purchased 11/2008. My tv is cycling on and off 15-20 times before it tuns on. It also clicks and has static. The young lady from the claims dept tells me it's not the capacitor. She thinks it's the main board or the panel???WTH. Ok, so I have to call their approved service reps to find out how much I will have to PAY OUT OF POCKET to get my tv fixed. WOW! I will be looking into whether or not there are enough people out there with the same crappy Samsung tv problem. I think it's time for another class action lawsuit. NEVER EVER GOING TO BUY SAMSUNG PRODUCTS.

Years ago, I experienced the same exact problem with Samsung. We only owned the TV for a year and a couple of days. Exactly two or three days after the warranty expired the power supply capacitor went bad and the TV went blank.

We took it back to the store where we bought it, which was "Sears", they attended us as if it was something very normal and asked us to pay about half of the TV cost to fix the problem. As we were tired of those too common "nickel and dime" practices, we didn't fix it. We trashed the TV set instead.

Can we join a group of customers in a new "class action" or are we covered by this one?

I have a 2009 PN58B650 which is now dead thanks to this same issue. Samsung repair is asking almost $400 to fix this. They need to expand the scope of this settlement, as the issue persists well beyond 2008.

I have a Samsung HLS6187WX That I has been repaired x 2 ($647.80 and 824.69) for the same issue. Even after repair still shuts down while watching. This was a retirement gift and have been very disappointed and will not purchase another Samsung again. Samsung and Sony use to be top of the line but from all the research I've seen, LG and VISO seem to be better.

I own a 60" LCD, model LN60C630 television I purchased Christmas of 2010, this recent Christmas my son turned on the TV and it came on and seconds later the picture was gone, but I had sound. The warranty is up, but I am being told that the issue may cost anywhere between $1200 to $1500 to fix, as it is a back light issue and the lcd panel needs to be replaced. My TV still looks brand new, has not been moved and has no damage, yet 2 years after purchase, it needs major repair. Are there any other class action lawsuits pending, as this seems to be an issue that plagues these kinds of sets and Samsung is not sticking by there product and not trying to help resolve these issues. Any information would be helpful, as I am now dealing with a $3000 paperweight.

when I saw this suit I was so happy since the samsung I bought we have had nothing but problems with. Its been repaired twice and still not wking correctly!!! very Anoying!! finally just bought another T.V,!! & It defently was not a samsung!!! but when I went to file my Claim My T>V> isnt even listed on there!!! I defenly wont recomend a samsung T.V. to anyone!!!

obviously Samgsung has a bigger problem than they think. i just bought a 55" led tv which doesn't seem to be listed on the covered models which is doing the same exact thing. The tv is just out o warranty, which i purchased it on 6/11/2011 and have no where to turn. It is useless to me the way it is because it just automatically turns on and off and from what it sounds like I'm going to have to front approx. $500 - $600 for repairs. I was wondering if there is a way to extend the law suit to cover other more current models having the same problems?

I am a former engineering tech as were the two persons who originally filed the lawsuit against samsung. The problem was that the company used capicitors rated at 10 Volts max. on a power board that was rated at 12 Volts. Any tech worth his salt knows that it is just a matter of time before they fail. I had mine repaired for free by the techs. But now the picture sometimes flickers, could be there are other capacitors rated at 10 volts on some of the other boards like maybe the video portion? I suspect that is the case. It doesn't happen often but I will be on the watch if it gets worse.

this samsung tv is beyond annoying and the samsung technicians i talked to tried to blame our cable company yet our neighbors plasma tv's(not samsung) had not any problems,this went on for two years...and fortunately i found this page and claim form,however no doubt they will deny it as it is after march 2012.....i won't even get a samsung cell phone now NOTHING with the word samsung on it.

We have a 52" Samsung made in 2009. The capacitor went out 2011 costing us 350.00 to repair. The capacitor went out again this month. This time the cost to fix is 400.00 Samsung was contacted several times. All attempts for them to do the right thing failed and my written claim involving the class action suit was denied becouse the TV was made in 2009 not 2008. Although the serial numbers were the same? Amazing.

My 55" showed no signs of any problems until one day i turned it on and it made a very loud popping noise.After that all it did was make clicking noises when i tried to turn it on.Samsung was really good about getting a repairman out to replace the power board.They changed it,put it back together and turned it on.It came on perfect and had audio but didn't have video.They said there must have been a power surge that fried something else.My theory is if the original bad part caused the surge that fried the other parts shouldn't those have to fixed by Samsung also???? The techs said it would cost between $800-$1000 to fix it and it would be cheaper to buy a new T.V. This also happened to a friend of mine in Washington with his 46" Samsung and the service techs told him the exact same story right down to the cost of the other parts...I wonder how many others this has happened to.I now have a useless T.V. sitting in my garage.....Any ideas????

I had two of these units including A THIRD that they SOLD me at a discounted rate after I went crazy when it blew again.....I filled all the paperwork over 6 months ago and I have not heard anything back. Does anyone know how to find out what is going on???

At the beginning when I found out my tv was on the list, samsung was pretty good at taking care of the issue. First the capacitor, then the power board..but for me the tech said that the capacitor surged and fried the other board not covered and samsung said that they don't cover that. The gc would of been a better deal with less hassle.

there is something wrong with this lawsuit i submitted my claim form long before the deadline but i was told my claim was late and that i would not be getting a refund i think that samsung is wrong but there is nothing i can do about it.

I just found out about this suit because our Samsung which is one of the designated models failed for the 2nd time. First time Power Supple Board and capacitors changed for $250. on 12/2008. TV failed this week and in Googling about this model I came across the suit. Called Samsung and they said my model is one in the suit but my symptoms were not like those of capacitators this time. Was told I would receive a call back in 48 hours, which I did not. When I called they denied telling me I would receive a call back. Said I could have the service person look at it but I would have to pay for it if it was not a capacitator issue which they indicated it most likely would not be since I saw smoke coming from TV. I was furious and told them why would I wait 48 hours for a call and then be told to have their person come out to verify probably at my expense? I took it to the place where it was fixed in 2008 and they just called me with the diagnosis. Again a capcitor problem but in a different place than the first one. So do i have Samsung come out and fix it since I know it is a covered problem? Or let the service place fix it and try to get funds back. I write this because I cannot find who to contact with the lawsuit on the side of the plaintiff. I am seeing that people are not being taken care of while Samsung says that they will take care of it. I also note some repair people say they won't fix until Samsung pays them first as Samsung is not living up to their bargain. And ideas?

i purchased a 32 samsung lcd and it has power issues,a blinking light issue,sound issues... called samsung was told id have to send it to them. thing is they are not anywhere even close to me and shipping would be on me both ways. SAMSUNG THANKS FOR THE OVER 700.00 PIECE OF JUNK!!!!!!!!

I am having the same problem as the samsung customer. I had filed a claim for the lcd tv and it was approved on 03-30-2012. I called on 08-01-2012 wondering where it was and they said it was denied. I had all the correct information for the claim form. They are now saying you had to call before the claim started and it had to be documented!. what a scam!

has anyone filed a lawsuit against sony for their playstation 3d flatscreen tv's....we had our tv for 2 weeks then it suddendly would not come on again...extreme ly dissappoointing and frustating...pl ease let me know cause i would definelty want to my name included in courrt documents

Have any suits been filed for those of us who have useless 46" LCD's sitting in our garages due to the same problem? I paid $2k for a tv that isn't worth fixing.

I have a samsung tv not covered under this suit but I have the exact same problems they have. The power supply capacitors went bad and I had to buy a new power supply. It cost me $85 to buy it. I was pretty ticked off.

I have called samsung several times and submitted all the paperwork. My claim was approved on two different occasions and now a new representative named Sophia at extension 10456 is denying the claim after 90 days. I've called in to speak with a manager or a supervisor for a week and they keep telling me that all the supervisors are in a meeting. That must be some meeting that has been taking place for a week! Samsung has the worst customer support and I am about to contact the class action suit firm! I suggest you do the same, this needs to go before a judge again for denying all the legitimate claims!

We had bought a 32 inch samsung Tv and didnt have it but 9 months and it went out , we called the repair tech. and was told that we would have to pay shipping and handling to send it back, But his opinion was to just get rid of it and purchase a new one ,due to it would cost more to fix then to replace. But I told him that we only had it for 9 months . and he laughed and hung up the phone.
