Details: The Honda Civic Hybrid settlement will resolve a 2010 class action lawsuit alleging that the fuel economy estimates Honda advertised for the Honda Civic Hybrid could not be achieved under normal driving conditions. The class action lawsuit also claimed a July 2010 Honda software update to the Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) battery system negatively impacted the fuel economy and performance of its 2006, 2007 and 2008 Civic Hybrids.

Honda denies the allegations but has agreed to a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve the litigation.

Class Members of the Honda Civic Hybrid class action lawsuit settlement include anyone in the United States and/or District of Columbia who purchased or leased a 2003 through 2009 Honda Civic Hybrid, other than for the purpose of resale or distribution.

The Civic Hybrid settlement also includes a subclass of anyone who purchased or leased, other than for resale or distribution, a Honda Civic Hybrid model year 2006, 2007 or 2008.

On March 16, 2012, the San Diego Superior Court approved the class action lawsuit settlement. Class Members can file a claim to receive the following benefits:

(1)  Cash Payments. If you are dissatisfied with the fuel economy you have achieved in your Honda Civic Hybrid, you can receive a cash payment of $100. If you are a Subclass Member and are dissatisfied the performance of your vehicle’s hybrid battery or the July 2010 Software Update, you can receive an additional $100.

(2) Rebate Certificates. In addition to the cash payment, all Settlement Class Members will be entitled to request a rebate certificate entitling them to either a $1,000  non-transferable rebate on the purchase or lease of a new Honda or Acura vehicle, or a $500 fully transferable rebate. Subclass Members can receive an additional $500 fully transferable rebate certificate.

  3. bob says:

I received my check for 200 today.i’m not mad with honda, they still have nice products.i have a honda mower and boat motor. Now if GM will give me something for that headache of a car,2008 grand prix.that was a junker from the time it rolled out the factory doors.

  4. NH says:

I received my $100 check in the mail this week. Filed the paperwork sometime last fall, I think.

  5. JC says:

For those who are having battery problem after the amended warranty coverage expired, you still have a good chance that Honda will pay a high percentage of the repair cost. My 2007 HCH with 107K miles started to have charging issues (rapid swings between full and empty) and subsequently warning lights came on and off, Honda paid most to replace to battery pack except $270 which they termed as “insurance deductible.” But I had to persistently fight (in a civil way) for it. Call Honda customer service 800-999-1009 to set up a case. (PS. I am the original owner and and had all services performed at dealership, which might or might not have played a role in Honda’s decision.)

  6. JC says:

When did you guys submit the paper work? I sent in 11/12 and still heard nothing back.

  7. KS says:

Received my check for 200 on 2/4/13

  8. Cory says:

I was always convinced it wasn’t my driving that resulted in the lousy gas mileage. A constant complaint from my ex. Now that both are…x’s…
I will say I was satisfied with the Honda and never had any problems with it. Even though 50 mpg would have been nice, 42 was acceptable and when gas prices were $4+ you didn’t hear me complain. HOV lanes were great too! I will opt out and save Honda $100.

  9. Anonymous says:

woopidoo! All that cash, a lousy $100. The battery alone cost over $3500 to replace. As for the $1000 rebate coupon for a new Honda, yes please Mr Honda! you stuck it to me once do it again. This settlement is an insult. I opted out of this lousy deal. Once I get rid of my Civic hybrid I will never ever buy a Honda again. They do not stand behind the customer.
