Suave Keratin Scalp Problems Spark Class Action Settlement

Unilever United States Inc. has reached a $10 million class action settlement with customers who purchased its Suave Professionals Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kits and reported suffering a variety of problems. Customers claimed their hair was discolored, broken off, fell out in clumps, or their scalps were burned following the use of the product.

Some customers said that Suave’s Keratin Infusion 30-Day Smoothing Kit caused their hair to become “singed.” The product was marketed as making hair “sleeker, smoother and easier to style,” but customers said their hair was “melted or permanently destroyed.”

Leading up to the Suave Keratin Infusion class action settlement, a number of class action lawsuits claimed deceptive advertising, alleging that the manufacturer marketed Keratin Infusion hair product as formaldehyde-free when it was not. Formaldehyde is a carcinogen, and the breathing problems and skin irritation it causes are widely known.

While Unilever is not admitting any wrongdoing, and denies that the Smoothing Kit poses an unreasonable risk of harm to consumers, the company has established a $250,000 reimbursement fund and a $10 million injury fund. Between 225,000 and 260,000 Suave Keratin Infusion Kits were sold, and customers who suffered injury are eligible to receive up to $800 for medical or hair treatment expenses that were needed after using the product and up to $25,000 will be paid to victims who suffered significant injury to their hair or scalp.

Customers who purchased the 30-Day Smoothing Kit before Feb. 17 are eligible for the class action settlement. Customers who purchased the product and want a refund can receive $10. Those who say they received injuries from use of the product may be eligible to receive reimbursement for their medical expenses.
