Pradaxa Allegedly Led to Death of Utah Man

By Scott Hardy

Pradaxa Pill BottlePradaxa is allegedly behind the death of an elderly man who fell and bumped his head in his Salt Lake City, UT home. The Journal of Neurosurgery reported that the man was 83 and had only been taking Pradaxa for one month when he tripped and fell in his home, bumping his head. He was taken to the hospital where he was alert and responding to questions. The doctors opted to take CT scans as a precaution. The CT scans only showed small and what they thought of as minor hemorrhaging in his brain.

Unfortunately, after two hours in the hospital, the patient had new CT scans which showed the allegedly because of Pradaxa the brain hemorrhages had grown significantly. The doctors at the hospital tried valiantly to stop the brain hemorrhage thought to be caused by Pradaxa but were unable to and the patient fell into a coma  and died. There are no reports yet that his family has filed a lawsuit against Pfizer alleging that Pradaxa is behind the death of the patient.

The patient had been prescribed Pradaxa because it typically doesn’t cause severe interactions with other medications (unlike warfarin, a blood thinner medication.) The patient was thought to be a good fit for Pradaxa because he was also being treated for high cholesterol, irregular heartbeat (arrhythmia,) and gastric reflux disease. The issue is that Pradaxa, unlike warfarin, can’t be easily bypassed if a patient is experiencing severe internal bleeding or hemorrhage. To bypass the effects of a blood thinner medication like warfarin doctors just have to flush the patient’s system with vitamin K with which stops warfarin’s ability to interfere with blood clotting. Unfortunately, if a patient is taking Pradaxa and experiences severe internal bleeding or hemorrhage the only way to flush the system of Pradaxa is to put the patient on dialysis. This takes a significant amount of time in which the Pradaxa patient may die due to their severe internal bleeding or hemorrhage. Many families of Pradaxa patients are filing lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim for failing to notify them of the risk of death or severe injury  while taking Pradaxa.
