Asbestos Worker Wins $48M Mesothelioma Lawsuit Settlement

By Mike Holter

Mesothelioma asbestosA mesothelioma victim who worked with Union Carbide asbestos products for nearly 50 years has been awarded $48 million following a California Mesothelioma lawsuit that found the company liable for his illness. So far it is the largest asbestos lawsuit settlement reached in the United States this year.

According to the Mesothelioma lawsuit, 86-year-old Bobbie Izell worked in the Los Angeles area as a cement contractor in the 1950s and as a general contractor building houses in the 1960 until his retirement in 1994. Even though Bobbie rarely worked with asbestos directly, he was regularly exposed to asbestos dust when inspecting the homes he worked on, he claims in his Mesothelioma lawsuit. Unfortunately, in 2011, Bobbie was diagnosed with the lung disease Mesothelioma, which his Mesothelioma lawyer maintains was caused by the Union Carbide products he had worked with. Bobbie and his wife subsequently filed an asbestos lawsuit against the company, which led to the uncovering of an internal memo that revealed Union Carbide was aware of the Mesothelioma risks associated with asbestos in its products since at least 1967, but that they kept the findings secret to protect their building supply sales.

Fortunately, the jury sided with Bobbie in his asbestos Mesothelioma asbestos lawsuit, and awarded him and his wife $30 million in non-economic damages on June 14. The panel later added $18 million in punitive damages for the family.

Asbestos Lawsuits Filed by Victims & Their Families

An estimated 100,000 people have died, or will die, from Mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis or other asbestos-related diseases after being exposed to asbestos. Even though asbestos has been largely phased out of building materials, it’s still possible to be exposed to the deadly mineral and be diagnosed with an asbestos-related illness such as Mesothelioma, lung cancer, asbestosis, asbestos warts, pleural warts, pleural plaques, pneumothorax, and others. Even family members of workers exposed to asbestos are at risk for being diagnosed with Mesothelioma, even though they never handled or worked with asbestos. These family members are also participating in mesothelioma class action lawsuits or individual asbestos lawsuits, and being awarded portions of asbestos compensation funds.

Mesothelioma lawsuits are being filed across the country by victims and their families seeking compensation for their medical expenses, pain and suffering. If you or your loved one is a victim of an asbestos illness like Mesothelioma, it’s imperative you speak with a Mesothelioma asbestos compensation consultant to determine if you have a claim. Asbestos victims and their families have won millions of dollars in mesothelioma lawsuit and mesothelioma class action lawsuit settlements. A Mesothelioma asbestos compensation specialist will help you determine what’s best for you and your family.

Mesothelioma & Asbestos Side Effects

Anyone who has been exposed to asbestos should be aware of the side effects so they can file a claim for compensation. Common asbestos exposure side effects include:

* Mesothelioma
* Asbestosis
* Lung cancer
* Asbestos warts
* Pleural plaques
* Diffuse pleural thickening
* Pneumothorax (collapsed lung)

If you or your loved one has experienced any of these asbestos side effects, it’s critical you speak with an asbestos side effect and compensation consultant now to determine if you’re a good fit to file a Mesothelioma class action lawsuit or individual asbestos lawsuit. The medical expenses alone for any asbestos side effect could amount in the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and sadly some have died from an asbestos-related disease. An asbestos wrongful death lawsuit may be your best course of action.
