Chantix Lawsuit Details Dangerous Chantix Side Effects Statistics

Chantix side effectsMore than 40 people from across the country filed a joint lawsuit against Pfizer, Inc. and its California distributor, McKesson Corp., alleging they suffered severe side effects from taking the smoking cessation drug Chantix. The Chantix lawsuit alleges the drugmaker did not properly test the medication and intentionally ignored statistics that Chantix causes depression, aggression, suicidal tendencies and other psychiatric disorders, as well as heart problems in users. The lawsuit was recently transferred to multidistrict (MDL) litigation pending in the Northern District of Alabama, where it joins more than 2,400 other Chantix lawsuits seeking compensation for severe Chantix side effects.
 
Shortly after Chantix was released in 2006, a European Medical Agency report found that Chantix, also known as varenicline, increases the risk of "serious adverse reactions" six times more than the competing smoking cessation drug Zyban (bupropion). According to the Chantix lawsuit, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration announced varenicline accounted for 988 serious injuries in the U.S., "more than any other individual drug in this time period" in the fourth quarter of 2007. "By comparison, the FDA received a median of five reports of serious injury for 769 different drugs in the fourth quarter. Only 35 drugs accounted for 100 or more reports," the Chantix lawsuit says.
 
Plaintiffs in the Chantix lawsuit (entitled Frazier v. Pfizer) go on to allege that Pfizer officials kept denying a link between Chantix and suicide, despite admitting to Congress that the company received 322 reports of Chantix suicidal thoughts, 37 suicide attempts, and 16 Chantix suicides prior to November 20, 2007. The number of Chantix suicides jumped to 98 by July 2009, the lawsuit says, as well as more than 4,750 serious Chantix-related psychiatric events and 188 Chantix attempted suicides reported to the FDA in July 2009.
 
Plaintiffs in the Chantix lawsuit also allege that a yearlong Chantix side effects study demonstrated that 20 out of 251 Chantix users experienced "psychiatric disorders" while only 3 of the 126 patients taking placebos experienced similar problems.
 
"The relative risk that Chantix patients would suffer psychiatric disorders was more than threefold that of patients on placebo, a relative risk that was significant both clinically and statistically," the Chantix lawsuit alleges. 
 
The Plaintiffs, along with thousands of other Plaintiffs involved in Chantix lawsuit MDL, allege that the drug was defectively formulated, and that Pfizer is to blame for failing to warn users about the serious risks of Chantix side effects.
