Another Chantix Depression Lawsuit Filed Against Pfizer
By Andrea Gressman
On July 9, 2012, a new plaintiff filed a lawsuit against Chantix drug maker, Pfizer. This Chantix lawsuit was filed by Sallie Lynne Casey in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Alabama. According to her lawsuit, Chantix caused severe side effects resulting in depression. Casey joins hundreds of plaintiffs seeking compensation from Pfizer for failing to warn about Chantix side effects.
Details of the Latest Chantix Lawsuit
In this most recent Chantix depression lawsuit, Casey is seeking compensation from Pfizer, claiming that the side effects she experienced were the direct result of using the smoking cessation drug Chantix. She is claiming that after she started taking this prescribed medication in July 2009, she experienced a number of side effects that were psychological in nature. Some of these included the following:
* Suicidal thoughts
In an effort to receive compensation for these Chantix side effects, Casey is claiming the following in her lawsuit against the major drug manufacturer:
* Strict product liability
* Unjust enrichment
* Breach of both implied and express warranties
* Punitive damages
If Casey is successful in receiving a judgment against Pfizer, she will join numerous Chantix users that have successfully received compensation as the result of the negative side effects this prescription drug is known to cause.
Courts Consolidating Chantix Lawsuits In Order to Handle Volume of Cases
Many patients have experienced severe side effects due to Chantix and are seeking compensation through personal injury attorneys. In fact, there have been so many Chantix lawsuits filed in the last few years that some of these lawsuits are now being consolidated in an effort to help the courts address them in a more time-efficient manner. The consolidation of these Chantix lawsuits into a multi-district litigation (MDL) is good news for Plaintiffs seeking compensation for Chantix injuries because it will expedite the process of resolving their cases.
The Link Between Chantix and Depression
The whole point of Chantix being prescribed is to help people quit smoking. However, thousands of people who have relied on this drug to help them have actually become at risk for many psychological side effects. These Chantix side effects commonly include thoughts of suicide, but also suicide attempts. Sadly, some Chantix users have taken their own lives after they began this drug treatment regimen.
However, it is not certain exactly how Chantix is causing such severe side effects to occur. Some doctors do believe that Chantix may be causing these side effects because the drug is interfering with the nicotine receptors in the brain. They think that this is causing a reduced amount of dopamine to be naturally released, leading to depression.
In July 2009, the FDA did start requiring black box warnings to be included on the packaging of Chantix. This warning was to include the potential side effects of the drug, including the psychological side effects. After this warning was included on the packaging, a number of existing patients realized that their anger, aggression, and depression were a result of using Chantix, resulting in a number of lawsuits being filed.
