Government to Pay $500,000 in Asbestos Cleanup Lawsuit
By Mike Holter
The federal government has agreed to pay nearly $500,000 to settle an asbestos lawsuit filed by an Oregon nonprofit association that alleged the government failed to clean up asbestos debris left behind at a former U.S. Army Corps of Engineers training camp near Sunriver, Oregon.According to the group's 2010 asbestos clean-up lawsuit, asbestos was found on six acres of a 22-acre parcel from Camp Abbot. The government demolished most of the buildings at the camp starting in 1944, but later abandoned some of the asbestos-laden material once it left the site, the lawsuit claimed. The community of Sunriver was developed on the Camp Abbot ground in 1968.
Deadly Side Effects of Asbestos Exposure
Asbestos is a known human carcinogen that has been linked to numerous diseases, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, asbestosis, and more. When asbestos fibers are breathed in, they can get trapped in the lungs and remain there for a long time. Over time, these asbestos fibers can accumulate and cause scarring and inflammation, which can affect breathing and lead to serious health problems.
The most common form of cancer associated with asbestos exposure is mesothelioma, a rare cancer of the thin membranes that line the chest and abdomen. In addition to lung cancer and mesothelioma, some studies suggest a link between asbestos exposure and gastrointestinal and colon cancers, as well as an elevated risk for cancers of the throat, kidney, esophagus and gallbladder, according to the National Cancer Institute.
Treating asbestos cancers like mesothelioma and lung disease can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars, and sadly many people will die from these diseases. This leaves family members of victims bearing the expense of their loved one's medical expenses and funeral costs.
