21 Lawsuits Transferred to New Pradaxa MDL

Pradaxa Pradaxa users who suffered internal bleeding may have a better chance of pursuing compensation for their injuries thanks to a recent decision regarding all current and future Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits. On August 8, 2012, a federal judicial panel signed an order consolidating all federal Pradaxa bleeding lawsuits into one court in Illinois. The new Pradaxa lawsuit MDL (multidistrict litigation) will make it easier for victims to sue the drug maker by streamlining the litigation process.

About 20 lawsuits were transferred to the Pradaxa MDL from various courts around the country, a move that was spearheaded by the Plaintiffs’ Pradaxa attorneys in order to eliminate duplicate discovery, prevent inconsistent pretrial rulings, and to conserve resources. The new Pradaxa lawsuit MDL will be presided over by U.S. District Judge David R. Herndon, who is well-regarded for his vast experience in pharmaceutical product liability cases and MDL proceedings. Judge Herndon currently presides over the Yasmin/Yaz birth control MDL — one of the largest such actions in the United States.

Each Plaintiff in the Pradaxa lawsuit MDL is claiming the product caused serious internal bleeding, and that drug maker Boehringer Ingelheim over-promoted the benefits of Pradaxa while downplaying its risks. Plaintiffs also accuse Boehringer of concealing from consumers and the medical community that there is no antidote for Pradaxa bleeding. Doctors treating patients for Pradaxa internal bleeding have no way to stop the drug’s blood-thinning effects, unlike its competitor Warfarin, which can be treated with Vitamin K. Over 500 Pradaxa bleeding deaths have been reported to the FDA. According to the Institute of Safe Medicine Practices, more deaths were linked to Pradaxa than any other medication in 2011.
