New Yaz Lawsuit Filed by Victim of Serious Blood Clot Injuries
By Sarah Pierce
Another Yaz lawsuit has been filed by a woman who suffered severe blood clot injuries known as pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis allegedly caused by the popular birth control pill Yaz. Minnesota resident Cathy Wagamon is the latest Yaz blood clot victim to sue drug maker Bayer for concealing the risk of side effects of Yaz. Bayer faces nearly 12,000 lawsuits seeking compensation for injuries caused by Yaz and its sister medications, Yasmin and Beyaz.
Wagamon alleges in the Yaz lawsuit that shortly after taking Yaz in October 2009 she developed deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). DVT occurs when a blood clot forms in the deep veins of the body, usually in the legs or pelvis. PE is a potentially fatal condition caused by a blood clot in the lungs. Both conditions have been linked to Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz, Ocella and other birth control pills containing the hormone drospirenone. A recent study published in the British Medical Journal found that these birth control pills can triple the risk of serious blood clots (known as venous thromboembolism) compared to traditional pills, putting users at risk for dangerous side effects such as pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis, heart attack, stroke and even death. At least 50 deaths were reported between 2004 and 2008, and thousands of Yasmin lawsuits, Yaz lawsuits, Beyaz lawsuit and Ocella lawsuits have been filed.
Like most Yaz lawsuit Plaintiffs, Wagamon claims she never would have taken Yaz if she had known the risks of blood clots associated with it. Her lawsuit notes that even after it received numerous complaints of Yaz blood clot injuries, Bayer did not warn patients or the medical community about the potential side effects of the medication until it was forced to by the FDA. Plaintiffs in Yaz lawsuits say Bayer should be held liable for continuing to market a drug it knew was unsafe and for concealing the risk of side effects from the public.
Bayer Reaching Yaz Lawsuit Settlements
Bayer admits no wrongdoing in its marketing of Yaz, but has agreed pay millions of dollars in settlements to resolve the mounting litigation it is facing. To date, some 1,900 Plaintiffs have received Yaz lawsuit settlements totaling more than $402 million in compensation. In August 2012, the company announced it is setting aside an additional $610 million to pay out even more Plaintiffs.
