Unum Customers Experience Despicable Nightmares

By Andrea Gressman

Unum disability insurance denialUnum, also referred to as Unum Provident, is one of the largest providers of health insurance in the United States. However, they may not be as helpful as the company would have people believing they are. In fact, one Forth Worth, Texas resident can attest to the fact that Unum customers may very well experience nightmarish results from this very popular health insurance company. Byron discovered he had a heart condition, was deemed unable to work, and because of an improper Unum disability insurance claim denial, he nearly became homeless.

In 2007, 48-year-old Byron discovered he had a heart condition and needed a cardiac defibrillator chest implant. Rather than quitting his job, he continued to work for the Fort Worth school district in the field of construction and maintenance for another two years. Eventually, his condition got worse, which forced him into early retirement. Byron had no other choice but to stop working. Because of his condition, Byron filled out an application for long term disability (LTD) with Unum and began the process of collecting his benefits.

For the first six months, Byron had no issues. He received his benefit payment on time and everything was seemingly working out great. However, after that six month period he began receiving harassing phone calls from Unum. They kept asking when he was going to go back to work. Byron states that “the Unum representatives even made up things. They ‘heard’ that I was able to go back to work. I asked where they got that information from and of course they would never tell me. They would just laugh it off.”

A year ago, in 2011, Byron went back to his cardiologist. The cardiologist performed a stress test and the results were definitely no good. That same day, Byron also discovered that his check from Unum that month was $60 short despite only receiving $800 a month. When he called, they said it was a mistake and they would fix it. However, they also told him he was going to lose his benefits by the very next day. They claimed they had received a letter from his doctor stating he was able to work.

Byron asked for copies of the letter and told Unum that his doctor wanted to contact her attorney since she had never written a letter granting his release back to work. The insurance coordinator from Byron’s former place of employment contacted a representative from Unum as well. The representative issued Byron an apology and Unum began issuing his payments again with no further harassments. Byron later discovered after doing online research that several Unum policy holders had reported nightmarish experiences as well. He also discovered that Unum was actually required to give a 30 day notice when it came to cancelling his benefits and what they did was actually against the law.

Fortunately for Byron, he did not have to file a Unum lawsuit in order to get the compensation he was entitled to from his Unum benefits. But other Unum policy holders are not so lucky and end up having to file a Unum lawsuit as their only option in receiving the compensation that they deserve. As you can see from this story, Unum will stop at nothing when it comes to terminating your Unum benefits. Don’t let this happen to you. File a Unum lawsuit and protect your legal rights.
