ISMP Completes Study on Propecia Sexual Side Effects
By Andrea Gressman
Propecia, also known as finasteride, was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in order to treat men struggling with male pattern baldness. Although it has been found to be effective when it comes to treating hair loss, it has also caused terrible side effects for many users. Worse yet, many of these side effects do not go away despite the fact that the men stop using Propecia.
The ISMP study confirms what many men have stated in lawsuits against the manufacturer — that erectile dysfunction from Propecia use can be a long-term and potentially permanent side effect. As a part of this, the ISMP study did make reference to another study that was completed over a 40-month period that confirmed this finding.
However, ISMP was still unclear as to why the sexual dysfunction persists after Propecia is discontinued. They stated that a possibility was that Propecia triggered changes of the prostate that continued after the user stopped taking the drug, leading to the long-term side effects that could possibly be permanent. From there ISMP stated that there needs to be more research regarding these side effects of Propecia and its main ingredient, finasteride.
The Institute for Safe Medication Practices is a non-profit organization that was established over 35 years ago. It has a respected reputation for completing investigations of prescription drugs in order to ensure safe practices are used and to prevent medical errors.
According to the ISMP report there were over 50,289 Propecia side effect events reported to the FDA. Of those there were 61 reports made in the 2nd quarter of 2012 alone; 46 of them reported sexual side effects. The report goes on to state that 71% of these side effect reports alleged that they were “significant or long-term disability.” Some of the sexual side effects reported by the Propecia users included the following:
- Anorgasmia
- Decreased size of penis
- Gynecomastia (male breast enlargement)
- Pain of the scrotum
- Peyronie’s disease
- Testicular pain
- Testicular shrinkage
It was also reported that the FDA has updated the information for prescribing Propecia due to the seriousness of these sexual side effects.
Pending Propecia Lawsuits
There are now almost 400 Propecia lawsuits that have been currently filed and are pending in the court system. Due to the high number of Propecia lawsuits a multidistrict (MDL) was established in the federal court to consolidate the proceedings and streamline the litigation process. Some of the sexual side effects that have been reported by plaintiffs in these lawsuits include the following:
- Cancer of the prostate
- Diminished or lost libido
- Failure of the endocrine system
- Male breast cancer
- Peyronie’s disease (penile curvature)
- Problems with ejaculation
- Psychological problems
