Doctor Advocates Against Propecia Due to Sexual Side Effects

By Andrea Gressman

Propecia hair lossDr. Andrew Rynne has over 30 years of experience in the medical field and is now considered a sexual dysfunction specialist. In an article he published on his website on February 28, 2011, he strongly advocates against the use of Propecia, also known as finasteride, for men looking to treat their male pattern baldness.

He is quoted in saying, “Do not under any circumstances, even for one minute, consider taking the testosterone-suppressing drug Proscar or Propecia or Finasteride to give it its chemical name. The consequences of using this drug for male pattern balding can be life shattering.”

Dr. Rynne cites a portion of the warning that Merck, the manufacturer of Propecia, provided at the time. The drug maker mentioned that a “small number of men experience certain sexual side effects” and that these problems only occurred in “less than 2% of the men” using Propecia. Merck also said these side effects “went away” when the men stopped taking Propecia.

Dr. Rynne takes serious issue with the figure of 2%, saying that he does not accept this percentage as accurate. He also says Merck’s statement that Propecia sexual side effects will disappear after discontinuing the drug “is simply not true.” Dr. Rynne says Merck also knew this statement was not true because he, as well as others in the medical community, have told the drug maker that Propecia side effects continued after the patient stops taking the hair loss drug.

However, this has been a huge point of contention for Merck and the many Propecia lawsuits that have been filed against the drug maker. Although there have been changes to the warning label over the past few years, Merck still does not fully acknowledge the severity of the sexual side effects Propecia can cause.

Dr. Rynne also said, “In some cases men who have taken Proscar, even for a few months, have unwittingly condemned themselves to a lifetime of sexual anhedonia, the most horrible and cruel or all sexual dysfunctions.”

Sexual anhedonia is the inability to feel pleasure form an orgasm. It is clear that Dr. Rynne understands the severity of the sexual side effects that have been linked to Propecia.

If you have experienced sexual side effects after taking Propecia it is important to know that you are not alone. Thousands of men have experienced a similar situation.
