Mirena IUD Can Cause Permanent Damage

By Christina Drury

intrauterine (IUD) birth controlWhen it comes to choosing birth control, no matter which method you choose, side effects should be taken into consideration. Just as traditional birth control pills have risks, so do intrauterine birth control methods such as the Mirena IUD. The concern with Mirena side effects like uterine perforation and infertility is that they are potentially permanent. Since being approved for mass marketing and distribution, the Mirena IUD has been implanted in two million women in the United States and approximately 15 million women worldwide.

What is Mirena?

Mirena is an intrauterine birth control device (IUD) that is used alternatively to the more traditional oral contraceptive pill. The principal demographic that is most likely to choose this method of birth control are married women that have given birth to one child and would prefer not to take oral contraceptives. These women generally elect to have the IUD implanted while they decide whether or not they would like to have another child.

Mirena is designed to disrupt hormones and contains a synthetic hormone called levonorgestrel. However, just as other forms of contraceptive have associated side effects, so does Mirena, which can include the migration of the IUD device through the uterus and into the abdominal space.

Women Begin Filing Lawsuits

Several women have recently begun filing lawsuits against the makers of Mirena alleging they have suffered permanent injuries. These lawsuits claim that as the IUD migrates through from its original position it releases a hormone suppressant into the body.

One of the Mirena lawsuit plaintiffs had the device implanted in 2009 and in 2010 underwent a hysterectomy to have it removed. When doctors performed the surgery they were unable to find the device in her uterus. Further investigation led to the discovery of the device in her left abdominal wall. While the IUD was inside the plaintiff, it had moved from her uterus through the uterine lining and through her body into her abdominal cavity.

Mirena Side Effects

Other adverse side effects that have been associated with Mirena include:

  • Abscesses
  • Menstruation cessation
  • Pelvic Inflammatory Disease
  • Ectopic Pregnancy
  • Sepsis
  • Infertility
  • Erosion of areas adjacent to and to the vagina

There have also been reports of a decrease in libido in close to 5% of Mirena users that were the subjects of a clinical trial. The maker of the IUD, Bayer, has been warned by the FDA regarding the overstatement of the benefits of their product.

  1. Hailie says:

I know I don’t have any stds and nor does my partner, and I just got the IUD like a few weeks ago, and just a while ago I started getting itchy. I don’t why, but since my partner left out of the country for the holidays, I got itchy and it didn’t happen until after I used a dildo. I’m on the Mirena IUD. I just hope it didn’t get misplaced or hope it didn’t fall out. Plus I tried feeling for the string attached to it and I can’t feel it but I think it could be because my fingers are too short and I can’t reach up far enough. Idk what’s happening.

  2. Amanda Harrington says:

I had the Mirena inserted to prevent endometriosis from returning. After a year and a half I couldn’t take the pain anymore and had to have it removed. My breasts were massive and rock hard, i always had shooting pain around my uterus and abs generally. Even after removal, the pain is still there, my body has never recovered and multiple drs and specialists just can’t tell me a reason for the pain despite countless tests and internal and external scans.
I wish I had just let the endo come back because at least I can reduce the pain associated with that. Even while I had the device in the specialist just kept telling me that the symptoms i was having ‘aren’t associated with the Mirena’ yet so many women personally know, and online, were all suffering the exact same things.

  3. Cynthia Washington says:

I went to gp for referral for simple IUD and a mirena inserted. I asked for a copper 7 no issues in past to note when one was in place. I was referred to a gynaecologist and paid $135 I was in consultation rooms for 5 minutes. I had not even had smear test for years. I was told not to worry about birth control because 49 year olds don’t get pregnant. He never did blood test or even adrenal gland check no pelvic exam or to know I don\t have numerous partners or shove things into my uterus so its small. I went back to gyno and paid another $114 after paying for this device separate at a chemist never once mention about hormone slow release I presumed it was small and like copper 7. I just wanted something simple no fuss, private. Because my stalker told everyone and medical I was a alcoholic and on drugs that Im not, I don’t smoke they presumed my uterus was old and not healthy instead of the healthy life style I live. I was fitted with mirena and I asked for smear test that he did. After insertion the swelling of the abdomen started. I felt moody and there was slight bleeding that increased and I had swollen tender breasts that were increasing with weight gain. I had symptoms of anemia I was told to come back to gyno bit over month after insertion. I persevered for 3 weeks but I was experiencing symptoms getting worse every day. I went back and gyno was away so I was told to get gp to take it out. I went next day and gp took it out after comment that’s what she likes to see blood. Yanked put. 3 days later still bleeding, swollen there, but least breasts are not still swelling. But trying to find a Dr to sort out symptoms that are not right is difficult because I went to Dr last night to sort it and she was phoning around and discussing me with everyone because no one qualified on
All I want to know if my uterus was punctured on insertion or incorrect getting out that a blood tests reveals. Or if the problem is caused by hormone therapy given without a check of my hormones just because of my age where the drug was suddenly stopped.

  4. Arlene says:

After the birth of my daughter, I had more natural implanted if you will. At first everything was great. My period was late the first month followed by a massive bleed within 5 weeks since it was put in. I woke to find myself and my bed covered in blood. Went to obgyn and found out I may have miscarried a baby or it migrated down. Device was removed and a new one put in.
Second time, device dropped out AGAIN and I experienced changes in menstruation, sometimes having a period three times a month. I finally removed it myself with the unpleasantness.
Since then, I have had a lot of issues. My hormones never went back to normal, I have severe pain around ovulation and my period. My periods went from regular to irregular, from average to severely heavy flow with me needing to change protection every hour, irregular hair growth, loss of hair on my head, cysts in my breasts etc. No one can figure out what is wrong but none of these symptoms were present until I had mirena for five months.

  5. hadassah brown says:

I had the mirena IUD twice also suffer abdominial pain , excessive discharge of blood. Also left me sterile and had to be removed and I had surgery partial hysterectomy.

  6. Sarah Martinez says:

I had the mirena twice since 2005 and now I have severe abdominal pevic pain, Im now going to have a pelvic ultrasound done to see whats going on. I have been with my husband for 14 years an never had painful intercourse until after this last mirena had to be removed, it started to come out on it’s own an for months I was woundering why I was having severe pain while it was in. I now gets cramps through out the month an it wont have anything to do with my periods.

  7. Jessica Shell says:

I had the mirena implant not for contraception but because my OB/GYN stated it would help with my post tubal syndrome. After this I continued to bleed prompting my removal of the implant and ultimately had a hysterectomy with a post-op diagnosis of adenomyosis-thickening of the uterine wall causing moderate to severe abdomnial pain
