Is the Mirena IUD Safe for Teenagers?
By Anne Bucher
The journal Obstetrics & Gynecology recently published a study from the University of Texas that recommends IUDs as a safe and reliable method of birth control for teenagers. Dr. Abbey Berenson, the study’s lead author, claims that the study suggests that IUDs may help reduce teen pregnancy rates.
The study was investigating the complication rate of IUD users between the ages of 15 and 44. In the sample of nearly 90,000 women, less than 1 percent of women experienced complications. The study also found that the complication rates were the same across all ages. Dr. Berenson stated that more research is needed.
Despite Safety Claims, Mirena IUD Lawsuits Continue to Rise
While researchers are touting the benefits of IUDs, thousands of women are seeking legal remedies to help them pay for the costly medical expenses associated with Mirena IUD complications. They complain of numerous Mirena IUD side effects, including pelvic inflammatory disease, perforation of the uterus, pelvic pain, ectopic pregnancy and other serious health concerns. Many of these injuries occur when a woman’s body rejects the Mirena IUD as a foreign object. In some cases, the IUD will migrate from its original location and either puncture or lodge itself into the uterus. When the device migrates, it can perforate the uterus and cause significant damage to the woman’s internal organs.
Numerous women have filed Mirena injury lawsuits against Bayer, alleging that the manufacturer overstated the benefits of the Mirena IUD and minimized its potential health risks. Because Bayer failed to warn about these Mirena IUD side effects, these women have suffered serious and painful injuries. Some women have even suffered infertility.
In many cases, women complained of discomfort but their doctors could not find anything wrong. Even when they could not find the strings to the Mirena IUD, they reassured their patients that there was nothing to worry about. After being told there was nothing wrong, the women attempted to go about their lives, doing their best to ignore the pain caused by the Mirena IUD complications.
When the Mirena IUD migrates from its original location, doctors have a difficult time finding it. Many women have reported that their doctors used x-rays to locate the device. When the Mirena IUD migrates outside the uterus, surgery is often required to remove it.
Federal Mirena IUD Lawsuits Consolidated in New York
Earlier this month, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation ordered all federally filed Mirena IUD lawsuits be consolidated in the U.S. District Court in the Southern District of New York. According to the court documents, there have been more than 40 Mirena IUD lawsuits filed by plaintiffs who allege that they suffered uterine perforations from the device. They also claim that Bayer failed to provide adequate warning about the dangers posed by the product.
If you have suffered serious Mirena IUD complications, you may be able to file a lawsuit against Bayer and receive compensation for your injuries.
