New Yaz DVT Lawsuit Filed in California
By Christina Drury
Â
In the trial presently before the California Supreme Court, the plaintiffs used Yaz as prescribed by their healthcare provider and developed deep vein thrombosis. There is no way of determining if any future health issues will affect either plaintiff beyond this diagnosis.
The Yaz lawsuit by the plaintiffs cites negligence of the part of the manufacturer, fraud, and failure to properly notify the public of the serious risks associated with its use. They are also seeking compensation for lost earnings, medical expenses and punitive damages. To date, Bayer has paid over $1 billion in Yaz lawsuit settlements, with countless numbers of lawsuits still pending.
History of Yaz and its Marketing
First released in 2006, Yaz quickly became the most popular birth control in the United States. Featuring young women in a positive setting, advertisements for Yaz prompted many young women to begin asking for it by name. Yaz was not only promoted as birth control, but also to prevent many of the side effects that occur during the menstrual cycle such as bloating, cramps and acne.
It was not long after achieving stardom that the oral contraceptive began to show signs for concern. It has been known for years that birth control pills enhance the possibility for blot clots, but no one knew just how much this risk was increased from taking Yaz.
Common Yaz Side Effects
Serious side effects that have been identified from Yaz are increased risk for developing blood clots, deep veins thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, heart attack and death.
In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) did a study that revealed a 74 percent greater risk for developing Yaz blood clots compared to other birth control pills on the market. To date, the FDA has not issued a Yaz recall, stating that the benefits for women outweigh the risks.
In January 2013, it was asked that the FDA take another look at a recall due to the fact that a prior panel left to decide the drug’s fate had members with special interests in the outcome.
