Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed Over Januvia Cancer

By Jessica Tyner

Januvia wrongful death lawsuitThe children of a California Januvia victim, Linda Blaylock, have filed a wrongful death lawsuit in California. According to Robin Tasler, a daughter of the victim, her mother was given Januvia and Byetta to treat type-2 diabetes. Recent studies have linked these two popular diabetes drugs to pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer.

Blaylock died in April of 2011 of pancreatic cancer, a serious side effect of Januvia that many victims claim they were never adequately warned about. Like other Januvia cancer victims, Blaylock was on the drug for many years before her cancer diagnosis. Type-2 diabetes can’t be “cured,” so most people find a drug that seems to work and stick with it for the long haul. This can cause heartbreaking results, which Blaylock’s family learned too late.

Januvia/Byetta Linked to Pancreatic Cancer

Blaylock began taking the Januvia and Byetta in 2008. These drugs work by increasing insulin production and keeping the pancreas from creating a surplus of glucagon. That’s great news for treating diabetes, but changing how the pancreas works has led to numerous cases of pancreatic cancer and pancreatitis. The pancreas produces hormones that are essential to controlling blood glucose levels, but it comes at a deadly risk.

Tasler claims in the Januvia/Byetta lawsuit that the manufacturers of these drugs failed to warn her mother and countless other diabetes patients about the risks of developing cancer. The lawsuit alleges Januvia is defective, the company chose to bury evidence of the risks. Tasler is suing for breach of contract, negligence and fraud. She’s not alone, and Byetta and Januvia injury lawsuits and are picking up steam around the country.

Januvia’s Side Effect History

Januvia has only been on the market since 2006, and it’s already developed a tumultuous reputation. While the FDA approved the drug that year, numerous complaints of Januvia side effects have led to further investigations.

In 2013, the FDA is taking a close look at Januvia risks, but that obviously comes too late for those who have died from Januvia side effects like pancreatic cancer and thyroid cancer. The FDA has to make careful movements when recalling drugs or requiring stronger warning labels, so it’s expected that more Januvia victims will step forward as class action lawsuits and drug injury lawsuits become successful.

Thus far, over 50 pancreatic cancer lawsuits have been filed, many of them concerning Januvia and Byetta. There are likely countless more that will join the movement as patients and survivors become aware of the link between these diabetes drugs and cancer.
