Journal of Sexual Medicine Researchers Weigh in on Propecia
By Jessica Tyner
Numerous studies have been conducted that link the anti-male pattern baldness drug Propecia to lasting sexual side effects. According to a report in the Journal of Sexual Medicine, Propecia certainly works — but it might be a trade-off. The potential side effects of Propecia — including erectile dysfunction, male breast growth, genital shrinkage and mood swings — can continue long after a man stops taking Propecia.
There are so many victims of Propecia side effects that drug injury lawsuits and Propecia class action lawsuits are flourishing in 2013. When testosterone is converted to dihydrotestosterone (a more potent form of testosterone), that’s when baldness occurs. Propecia works by lowering those conversion rates. This might lead to re-grown hair, but it may come at the cost of a person’s mental health and sex life.
Propecia Side Effects: A Game of Roulette
It’s difficult to gauge if a certain man will be a Propecia victim or not. Each person responds differently to testosterone levels, and playing God with the conversion rate can certainly impact sexual health and performance. Many users re-grow their hair with Propecia and don’t suffer any side effects. However, many others are unaware of the Propecia risks and trade a vanity problem for a very serious one that can end relationships.
According to the research revealed in the Journal for Sexual Medicine, around 38 percent of Propecia users experience some kind of negative side effects. How long a man uses Propecia and his dosage levels play a big role, but that doesn’t mean a person is safe because he “only” used Propecia for a few weeks. There are many reports of men stopping use after a month or two and experiencing ongoing Propecia problems.
Did Drug Maker Hide Propecia Problems?
The makers of Propecia do cite possible sexual dysfunction on the packaging, but also claim those issues are reversible. That’s good news, but those “reversible” claims haven’t passed muster and the Journal of Sexual Medicine, along with numerous other studies, have recently revealed that Propecia side effects might be permanent. Whether or not a man will face lifelong Propecia damage is a game of Russian roulette.
Another study at the GWU Medical Center focused on 70 men who had taken Propecia for varying amounts of time and with different dosages. After over three years, 40 percent of the men still suffered from Propecia complications.
