FDA: Dilantin May Increase Risk of Stevens Johnson Syndrome
By Anne Bucher
Dilantin (phenytoin) is a drug used to treat seizures that was initially approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in the 1950s. The effectiveness of phenytoin to treat seizures was first recognized in 1938. Phenytoin suppresses abnormal brain activity that commonly occurs during an epileptic episode. Some studies have shown phenytoin to be useful to stabilize moods and to treat anxiety, although these uses have not been approved by the FDA.
FDA Warns of Significant Dilantin Side Effects
Dilantin, manufactured by Pfizer Pharmaceuticals, has been commonly used to treat epilepsy. Despite its popularity, Dilantin has been linked to several serious side effects, including Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS). SJS is a rare, potentially life-threatening allergic reaction that is associated with certain drugs. In 2008, the FDA issued a warning about the potential for an increased risk of SJS in patients taking Dilantin.
When taken by pregnant women, Dilantin is associated with an increased risk of delivering a baby with major birth defects such as cleft palate, cleft lip or heart malformations. As with any drug, women who become pregnant while taking Dilantin should consult with their physician.
Dilantin SJS Symptoms
The SJS diagnosis is frequently missed by many physicians as the condition is rare. SJS generally manifests with flu-like symptoms and blistering around the mouth and eyes. As the condition progresses, the blistering spreads and may become more severe. Symptoms of Dilantin Stevens Johnson Syndrome include:
- Fever
- Sore throat
- Cough
- Rash
- Hives
- Blistering, especially near the eyes, mouth and nose
- Swelling
These initial conditions can cause long-term SJS complications, including blindness, organ damage and permanent skin damage. Because the symptoms closely resemble those of burn victims, many SJS victims are treated in burn centers. If you believe that you are experiencing symptoms of Dilantin SJS, visit your doctor immediately and discuss your concerns before the symptoms worsen.
Many victims of Dilantin SJS have filed lawsuits, claiming that the drug caused serious, potentially life-threatening complications. The plaintiffs allege that Pfizer was aware of the risk of SJS associated with Dilantin but failed to warn doctors and patients about the product’s potential dangers. These Dilantin lawsuits have resulted in millions of dollars being awarded to the victims to help them pay for their medical expenses and other losses.
If You Developed Dilantin SJS, Take Legal Action
If you or someone you love has suffered from Stevens Johnson Syndrome after taking Dilantin, you may be eligible to file a lawsuit. If your Dilantin lawsuit is successful, you could get compensation for your pain and suffering, medical expenses, lost wages, and other losses you experienced because of your injuries.
