One Man’s Stryker Hip Implant Disaster
By Jessica Tyner
Mike describes himself as in pretty good shape for being 59 years old. However, he is a victim of osteoarthritis in his left hip, and it was giving him enough trouble that he started looking for medical help. He opted to have a Stryker hip implant in December of 2010, and the heartbreaking side effects set in immediately. Just four weeks after his hip replacement surgery, Mike was in the ER with 25 blood clots surrounding his lungs.
It wasn’t just the blood clots that were worrisome. Mike’s heart was also protruding out on one side, and doctors had no idea what was happening. One doctor suggested testing for Lupus and Antiphospholipid Antibody Syndrome — Mike tested positive for both. He was repeatedly tested to confirm, and all tests came back positive. Told he would suffer from these issues the rest of his life, Mike was put on the blood thinner Coumadin.
Hip Implant Pain: The Underlying Issue
In addition to this discovery, Mike continued to feel pain in his hip for months. He requested x-rays, but they were always clear. However, one year later, Mike was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, and he was put on additional medications. He now reports getting blood tests up to 30 times per year for his failing health. Then the symptoms got worse.
Mike’s hands began shaking until he can no longer write. He’s often short of breath and has ringing in his ears. He’s chronically fatigued and his body naturally craves up to 12 hours of sleep per night. Mike knew all of these symptoms appeared after the Stryker hip implant surgery, but could that really be the cause of it all? He received numerous additional x-rays, and all appeared fine. It wasn’t until one savvy doctor tested the metal levels in Mike’s blood that the truth was revealed.
Cobalt Poisoning
Cobalt is used in Stryker hip implants, and there are mounting allegations that when the metal-on-metal parts of the Stryker hip implant rub together, they release metal particles into the body. Mike’s cobalt levels were off the charts and well into toxic territory. An MRI showed that fluid was gathering around the Stryker hip implant, and an immediate revision surgery was scheduled.
In an effort to prevent future expenses and pain, Mike got an attorney to help him through this difficult time. Stryker has agreed to pay for revision surgery, but at the moment it’s unclear how effective it will be. He hasn’t had the revision surgery yet, and is worried about the results. No doctor has linked Mike’s autoimmune diseases to the Stryker hip implant, but the impact of metal poisoning can be far reaching.
