Tygacil Linked to Increased Risk of Death

By Robert J. Boumis

Tygcacil Drug Lawsuit
The U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Drug Safety Communication warning patients and physicians about the risks of death associated with the antibiotic Tygacil (tigecycline).

The FDA’s statement came in late September of this year, and warned that Tygacil was associated with an increased risk of death compared to other antibiotics. The FDA’s research found that there was a higher risk of death even when the researchers controlled for other risk factors. The research indicated that the deaths tended to stem from a worsening of underlying medical conditions, like complications from infection, but they occurred at significantly higher rate with Tygacil than with other antibiotics.

Tygacil was originally developed and given fast-track approval by the FDA due to concerns about antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Since the introduction of antibiotics, various bacteria have developed the ability to resist the effects of antibiotic drugs. Poor medical and industrial/agricultural practices have encouraged this process. In response, the FDA has fast-tracked new antibiotics to give physicians new tools to treat infection.

At the present time, the FDA has not advised patients to stop taking their medication without consulting a physician, since this can have serious health consequences as well, including encouraging bacteria to develop resistance to Tygacil. However, the FDA has advised physicians to only prescribe Tygacil in cases when no alternative treatment exists.

A class action lawsuit investigation has been launched against the manufacturers of Tygacil. A Tygacil class action lawsuit could allege that the manufacturers were aware – or reasonably should have been aware – of the risk associated with this drug. For example, manufacturers of drugs are required to monitor peer-reviewed journal articles, FDA safety communications and post market surveillance systems for signs of serious complications associated with these drugs. Additionally, similar lawsuits for other drugs have alleged that manufacturers not only failed to act on such information in a timely manner, but may have actively concealed it, preventing patients and their prescribing health care workers from having all of the information they needed to make an informed medical decision.

If you’ve lost a loved one after they took Tygacil, you’ve probably found yourself facing a challenging situation. Losing a loved one suddenly can take a devastating emotional toll. In addition to the emotional challenges of such a situation, people who have lost a loved one must cope with financial burdens from the situation, such as medical bills, final expenses and lost income potential.
