C. Difficile Outbreaks and Flagyl SJS Side Effects

By John Curran

Flagyl side effects, Stevens Johnson SyndromeWhile there are growing concerns about the over-prescription of antibiotics and the resulting increased risk in Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) diagnoses, medical researchers are struggling to find alternatives for treating C. difficile that do not carry Flagyl side effects.

Flagyl is the first-line treatment for people, mainly older Americans, who have been on other antibiotics and as a result have a reduced level of gut bacteria. In healthy individuals, C. difficile is rarely an issue because it happily co-exists with other bacteria in the gastrointestinal tract. Yet when doctors prescribe broad-spectrum antibiotics such as Zithromax, the conditions often become perfect for C. difficile to spread.

When it does, the results can be tragic — kidney failure and death are possible. One in eight Americans diagnosed with an illness related to C. difficile require hospitalization and more than 20,000 succumb to the disease. Yet when considering treatments, doctors also face the prospect of subjecting older Americans to Flagyl Stevens-Johnson Syndrome side effects.

SJS occurs when the body attacks itself, specifically the mucus membranes and skin. Given that people fighting C. difficile are already dealing with compromised immune systems, this reaction can create significant problems. Some doctors prescribe steroids and other treatments to combat the condition, but there is no real cure for SJS.

Scientists are working to find a vaccine that would not destroy the bacteria but instead limit the toxins that it produces. However, it is still in clinical trials in the United States and at least three years away in Europe. In the meantime, older patients and those with compromised immune systems will likely have to rely on an antibiotic linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects.

People over the age of 50 who have used Flagyl and anyone who has developed SJS while taking an antibiotic may be able to pursue damages. Learn more about your options and get a free case eligibility review at the Stevens Johnson (SJS) & Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) Class Action Lawsuit Investigation today. While ongoing therapy may be necessary to treat your condition, any legal remedies could help defray those costs and pay for items and services to improve your quality of life.

I have to say, DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG! Flagyl about took me from my family. I was prescribed it for a stomach infection at the ER and it was horrible! I was prescribed 30 pills at 1 every 8hrs for 3 times a day. I didn’t make it through half the prescription and stopped there. After the first dose I felt like I had shingles on the inside of my body from head to toe. A few doses later I begin having suicidal thoughts! Made 3 trips to the ER and the same ER doc stated I was fine and needed to finish out the meds…even after my wife told him she was scared I was going to hurt myself. I was in a tight spot for about 3 days. Jesus pulled me out of it! I stopped at halfway thru a 30 pill script and within 24hrs I was feeling fine in my head. My body still has some effects: ears ringing, hot/cold tingling of the skin, gut discomfort, etc. Stay away from this poison!!

I got CDIF after surgery on back. I was told I had to take Flagyl to get rid of the CDIF. By the 3/4th day I started getting neuropathy type symptoms in upper chest area, neck and scalp, I told Doctor about it and I was told I had to continue or have fecal transplant. So I did continue the medication. Now I have heart issues, burning tongue syndrome, and severe burning in guts and back.

I stopped taking metronidazole on sixth day of 14 day regimen. middle of the night horrific episode lasted 5 hours, and into the next couple days. this is poison, not medicine! that this is being prescribed is criminal. I have lost faith in the medical establishment. I don’t trust any of them anymore.

  7. Nicole says:

I started taking this medicine in December 2017 and ever since the 3rd day on this medicine I started feeling dizzy light headed heart palpitations insomnia and anxiety and now 3 months later I am still battling all these side effects. I used to be always on the go and loved to stay busy now it’s a struggle just to work and as soon as I go home I just want to lay down. I feel like I have lost interest in everything. I don’t know what to do no more and feel completely helpless. I have seen a doctor that have prescribed me xanax but that doesn’t seem to help at times. I have tried to change my eating habits and push myself to be productive but it takes everything out of me jus to go on a outing with my kids. This medicine has messed my life up so bad I haven’t felt myself since all these symptoms started.

I had to double check if U wrote this because you sound like me. There years now and I’m still dizzy, chronic fatigue, weakness in legs, all over body pain, and much more. I was always a natural happy person, even in hard times, but now I feel sad all the time, this did something to my brain. Oh and I also got c-diff from Metronidazole/Flagyl and Cipro. I won’t even go into what Cipro has done to me.

  8. Hope says:

I suffered a brain injury in 2012, after being prescribed flagyl. My doter confirmed Metronidazole Toxicity Induced Encephalopathy in 2016. In 2017, I have slurred speech and, undergo therapeutic help with Johns Hopkins. This medicine IS poison and, help is hard to come by.

    1. Tom says:

I, also have serious damage in my CNS too include brain damage.

  9. Christina Nelms says:

I was just wondering if you all have received any reports of people having severe mental impairment several days to weeks after taking Flagyl? I experienced horrible symptoms and my fiance is still having symptoms! Our doctor nor pharmacist warned about anything other than not using alcohol with it, yet thousands upon thousands of forums of people are experiencing the same thing! the mental impairment has been so debilitating that I had to miss THREE days of work, and he had to force himself to go back even though he is anxious, feels like he cant breath and is having chest tightness. This medicine is poison and should be taken off the US market. Can anyone help?

    1. Ferlisha says:

That is exactly why I got on this website just to see if anyone experienced anything like that while taking this medicine I am by no means a suicidal person but this medicine induced psychosis severely with me anxiety attacks thoughts of ending my life deep depression I could be in a room with people but yet feel all alone almost like they were miles away I was afraid to sleep at home in my bed I literally park my car at the hospital for over a week and slept there they gave me a very high dosage to take all at once and the doctors in the ER kept telling me I just had to work out of my system I felt like it would never end I couldn’t work I couldn’t take care of my children I cried a lot I just wanted to check myself into some kind of mental institution my heart would race my blood pressure was abnormal I couldn’t eat and when I did it felt like my sugar has dropped or something I lost over 50 pounds that was a couple of years ago I am so proud to say I’m so happy to say it took almost six months to completely come out of that but even to this day I still have panic attacks every once in awhile the internet is what saved my life I got on the Forum and I found people that was suffering the same thing that I was suffering if someone on their mentioned the medicine that I had taken so I started doing a lot of research and that’s when I found out that it was flagyl. God bless the both of you I know the feeling

    2. Carmen says:
