Powerful Antibiotic Rifampin Linked to SJS Side Effects

By John Curran

Rifampin Stevens Johnson SyndromeThe antibiotic drug Rifampin, which is used to treat some of the most pernicious conditions including leprosy and bacterial strains, has been linked to some instances of Stevens Johnson Syndrome for decades. SJS is a potentially fatal reaction to medication that causes severe skin blisters and lesion on the eyes, mouth and other moist areas.

One of the earlier reports of Rifampin Stevens Johnson Syndrome was reported in the British Medical Journal in November 1977. Zimbabwean doctors had diagnosed a man with pulmonary tuberculosis and prescribed an antibiotic regimen that also included streptomycin and isoniazid.

The patient exhibited many of the common signs of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, including mouth ulcers, sloughing off of skin and eye problems. The doctors noted that the SJS symptoms recurred after taking him off the medication and reintroducing it. In other medical literature it is noted that the length of treatment for this medication can last months for certain conditions. However, more patients are at risk for Rifampin side effects when doctors either prescribe the medication for the first time or decide to change the dosage.

Still, the diseases for which the antibiotic is indicated are ones that pose a particular danger. It is used as part of the above-mentioned three-drug cocktail for both tuberculosis and leprosy, as well as MRSA and osteomyelitis. Patients who are dealing with these potentially deadly conditions should consider reviewing their options with a doctor prior to beginning treatment, especially if they have already dealt with the autoimmune disorders.

The first warning signs of Stevens Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis are relatively benign. Stippling of the skin on the extremities as well as the face could be the first symptoms of the two disorders that target mucus membranes, especially when accompanied by flu-like symptoms. However, patients should also note that there are other more benign conditions that can produce similar bodily responses.

Patients who have developed the disorder while taking this or any other medication may have legal options available to them. Learn more about your legal options by visiting the Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TEN) Class Action Lawsuit Investigation today.
